That's not the funny part. That's the sad part. No, the funny part _ the side-splittingly hilarious part _ is Sid's more general suggestion of mad-as-hell-outrage that any legislator would lower himself to pandering for votes.

Is there any need to fill in the punch-line here?

Any need to play the irony card? This is a guy who has built his entire career on pandering. It is the very essence of who he is and what he does. If there were a Mount Rushmore of panderers, Sid's face would be chiseled on it. To steal a line from a distant presidential campaign, he is a regular Pander Bear.

Pander to owners, to general managers, and to players by giving them whatever they want in print or on the air.

They need a shameless plug? They got it. They need a phony boost? They got it. They need a re-write of an episode in sports history to make themselves look better than they deserve? Sweetheart, get me rewrite. They need somebody to run interference for their new stadium, their new ball park, their new arena, their new summer camp, their new acquisition, they have their lap dog. It doesn't matter what the stadium deal is, they're all outstanding for the community, will end crime and maybe even cure a couple diseases.

The way it sounds, Sid was doing his post-game interview for the UM radio network. Not that it justifies a damn thing, mind you.

Sid's radio interviews are painful in the extreme. Really, UM broadcasts are pretty painful all the way around.

They should have cast him in Airplane for the part where the dude says, "They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into, I say, let 'em crash!" Would fit him nicely.

It was like watching a UFO... you know you're seeing something that shouldn't be there, but you're not quite sure what you saw.
Was my firsttime covering a game at the Metrodome, so I wasnt sure what to do... the Minnesota guys did nothing
It was over and done within two minutes of an afternoon game, so it wasnt but up against deadline, so it wasnt as crucial... more like let the old **** go so we can get work done.

moddy, from what i understand, sid owned some of the land bought by the city for the metrodome. the star tribune, then independently owned, also got in on that deal thanks to sid. it's all very shady and no one seems to be able to explain all the details. fwiw, he's rumored to be worth in the $40-50 million range.

That story about Sid and the land around the Metrodome has been around for a while, but I've never seen anything confirmed.  What has been confirmed is the origins of his wealth:  starting sometime in the 1950s, Sid and a childhood buddy started investing in rental properties throughout the Twin Cities.  That provided the initial stream of income, and apparently he's invested rather well.  The term slumlord has been used by some to describe him; that might not be totally fair, but I do know that some of his properties are in areas of town where you wouldn't want to live if you could avoid it.

Were he not such a jackass, and had he not attained his current position almost solely due to sycophancy, Sid's story might be kind of heartwarming - he grew up dirt poor and didn't graduate from high school, only to become about as prominent as anybody in Minnesota (which says plenty about Minnesota, unfortunately).

What may be most remarkable is that he's still a voter for the Pro Football Hall of Fame; only if they started selling off induction spots to retired players who paid enough cash, sort of like the Catholic Church used to do with indulgences, could they find a way to hurt their credibility more than they do by having him help decide who gets in.

I'm with Bruhman. My first thought (and I went to high school in MN) was Sid Fernandez. Fifteen years ago my friends and their parents thought Hartman was a senile old bat. I shudder to think what he's like now.
