There are plenty of free aps available. I never pay for apps. So there's that.

Also, the Droid (at least the one I have) also has a slide-out keyboard, so you can still use the QWERTY if you need to.

I'd wait it out a bit for the Moto Droid 2 that should come out this fall if you stay with Verizon. You're probably looking at a bill around $95 with taxes if not more. Yes, there are free apps. Not sure what the droid app store looks like, but with Apple, free apps are everywhere. I'm sure the droid store has them.

I've played with the touchscreen for both the Droid and the Incredible and while I don't think it's as smooth as an iPhone/Touch, it's certainly doable. My roommates have the Spring versions of the HTC models/Incredible/whatever and they text on it pretty fast.

I've been with VZW for about eight years and I'm about ready to jump ship to AT&T, but that's just me. Nothing wrong with the service, but the phone I want is with them and I don't see VZW getting the new iPhone anytime soon if at all. I'll see what gets pumped out for VZW in the next few months.

Anyway, if I were you, wait for VZW to pump out a 4G EVO phone.

I, like a few of my friends with the Droid, never use the QWERTY keyboard. I type much faster and neater by turning the phone sideways and typing on screen.

Ton's of free apps. The only paid app I have is the Super Nintendo emulator. Most of the really good apps are free too.

Love my Moto Droid, can't wait for 2.2 so I can go mobile wifi and get Adobe Flash.
If you need your Flash video fix, download Skyfire. It's a browser app that is free that can convert and play some Flash movies on your phone (take that iPhone).
No Hulu yet, but there are mods in 2.2 with Flash 10 that can use Hulu.

I've got one. It's pretty cool. Not as intuitive as the iPhone, but it has a bigger screen than the iPhone.

The camera and HD video are pretty awesome.

K, my Verizon contract is up in two weeks and I am seriously thinking of switching from my Blackberry to a Droid phone. I was looking around the Verizon site and it looks like there's three different Droid phones out there. And of course, I have questions.

Are there really any huge differences between the Motorola and the other brand? (Last Motorola phone I had was a Razr, ugh.)

Apps - Facebook, AP and Dictionary.com are really the ones I use the most (other than the Twins mobile, which I think I can download on a Droid phone). Are those available? (I'm sure FB is, but the others, I don't know.) Is there a website where I could look and see what's out there?

I was also looking at the Palm Pre - anyone know anything about that?

And while I'm at it, the New Every Two (or whatever they call it) - just how big a discount do they give you? I had a local cell phone company for years which was bought out by Verizon about two years ago, so this is my first experience with that. The Verizon website doesn't really say much other than you get a discount.

Rosie, I can tell you that Droid has AP, Facebook and Dictionary.com. There appear to be a variety of Twins apps, but I don't know if any of them are official or any good.

Unfortunately the app market only seems to be available on the actual phone. If there's anything in particular you're looking for let me know, and I'll look it up.

The Droid X is pretty damn impressive.

Those are my don't-wanna-live-without apps. But freebies are always good.

How's the calendar function? Oh, and tasks (to-do list). I use those on my phone. On my Blackberry, the only way I can "sort" appointments is assigning them a different email address (which I have three on my phone).

I have a regular Droid (from last fall) but the Droid 2 and Droid X are both unreal. I know several people who have each of those phones, and they all love them.

The calendar is awesome. It syncs to Google Calendar, so you can just update on your computer and have it autosync and keep you up to date on your phone that way.

Android is just spectacular, and you'll have fun playing with all the random apps in additions to the three that you mentioned as must-haves.

I love my original Droid. I can't seem to get it to sync to my work e-mail as easily as everyone else, but we'll see. But the Layar app is awesome if you're going to be going someplace you don't know well.

The Droid X has twice the processor as Droid 2. It's like 1.2 GHz to 550K mhz. I pulled up Yahoo's front page on each, and the Droid X was not only faster but loaded everything. The Droid 2 didn't load every photo.

I've went to my local Verizon store twice and played on all of the Droids for about 45 minutes. The Droid X seems to be where it's at. The only qualm I have is that it's much larger than any phone I've ever had.

I know the Droids cost around $500 each, but with the New Every Two (or whatever it's called), you get it for $300, then there's a $100 rebate. If you buy at the store, this is a mail-in rebate. If you buy online, it's an automatic rebate. I'm definitely buying mine online. I do not trust mail-in rebates.

Also, consider you'll likely have to buy a protective screen for the phone (can't scratch up a touchscreen too much) and a protective case. So figure that's another $30-40.

I'm going to buy the Droid X in early October.

Android 2.2, so you get the latest and greatest Android apps. A lot of companies are starting to do both Android and iPhone apps. You aren't tied down to the Apple ecosystem. Plus, it's Verizon so you have 3G coverage anywhere where there is service, unlike AT&T. I can't even get AT&T where I live, but that's changing in the next few months.

That is pretty much where I am at also. Verizon requires 29.75 per month data plan if you get the Droid.

The price I know of is through Verizon - at their stores and at their Web site. As I said, the sticker says$300, but it's essentially $200 after the rebates. The mail-in is for the store purchase and the instant is at the .com.

Every person I know has a thin protective screen on their smart phones, whether it's an IPhone or Droid.
