The USS Fitzgerald, an Arleigh Burke class guided missle destroyer, collided with a container ship off of Japan. Given the radar on that sort of ship, it is beyond me to understand how this could have happened. My guess is that the Naval Board of Inquiry won't understand how either, and that the Captain's career is in ruins. Four sailors medevaced, including the CO,and seven are missing.

How in seventeen hells does something as big as a container ship get close enough to run over you without anyone noticing?

Yeah, I thought that hitting just about anything costs you your command.

Tough week for the Navy between the "missing" crewman and this. I'm sure the Sec. of the Navy is getting an earful. Oh, that's right he still hasn't been confirmed by the Senate.

You just flipping channels and commenting on whatever's on grandpa? ;)

Yeah, pretty much. I surfaced from what I'd been doing around the house, checked my various news feeds, and stuck Megyn in this thread carelessly. Ten o'clock is really late when you're old like me.

Now get off my lawn.

I haven't asked my brother, a naval veteran, about this yet. But I do remember him telling me about a time back in the '70s when the nuclear submarine he was on hit a cement barge that was full of monitoring equipment and was actually monitoring this particular submarine at the time. I guess it is as simple as: **** Happens.
