I'm still somewhat close to the situation, or close to people who are closer. Stay far, far away.

Wow, McCaw sounds like a character based on that Wikipedia article.

I, too, worked for a very hands-on owner at a former stop. He didn't necessarily want to control the content, but there were times when he stepped in and demanded something done a certain way that was ethically questionable at best, and largely influenced by his personal agenda within the community. It was irritating and wrong.

If Wendy is 100 times worse, which it sounds like she is, I wouldn't go anywhere near this job. You're basically organizing her toy box, and you have to check your own news judgment at the door. That's not easy to do if you're proud of the product you help create.

It's worse than that. The search function turns up 11 old threads about the ongoing train wreck that is Wendy McCaw and the Santa Barbara News-Press on the Journalism Topics forum and according to this, some things are same as they ever was.

OK, the place is ****ed up. But it's a job. You get in there, earn a pay check and move on.

Sure, Drip, since everybody's moving on to bigger and better things so easily nowadays.

Then don't be surprised that -- if you get the job -- when you get there to start work, you suddenly discover it's not a full-time job with benefits, but considered a temporary job with full-time hours and NO benefits ... a good number of the SBNP's staff is supposedly made up of a lot of people working under those conditions ...

I've heard they have stopped with that arrangement.. they got sued over it by some former employees who were temps throughout their sometimes multi-year stay there.

This is a job that a few years ago I would've killed for. And now, with all that's gone on there (including several people I know losing jobs) I wouldn't come near it. Really. There's a reason all those people left. Yes, even in this market.

And if you do apply and get the job, be prepared for a LONG commute. There's no way you can live near Santa Barbara on what they're likely to be paying.
