It's been obvious from these last two nights.

The entire Cubs organization -- fans, players, everyone -- is so conditioned to failure that when the playoffs begin, we all sit around waiting for the shoe to drop.

When any *slight* break goes the other team's way, fear and panic set in and it turns into a 4, 5, 8-run inning. This team has been playing expecting -- and waiting for -- failure from the first pitch last night. It's like they've turned into a bunch of zombies. This is an extension of last year ... Mark Reynolds' HR in Game 1 off Marmol has turned into a snowball this team can't stop.

Zambrano pitched an unreal game tonight, and he gets hung with 6 runs -- five of which can be attributed directly to Mark DeRosa's lethargic attempt at "defense."

This isn't the team that won 97 games. This is the team that's just going through the motions waiting to get beat. And it's somewhere between sad, sickening and maddening to watch.

They had stretches during the season in which they played just like this.

Their offense is built around the home run. When they don't hit homers, they don't score.

And Derrek Lee shares the blame with DeRosa.

Lee's error was bad, but if DeRosa cleanly fields a gimme 4-6-3, Lee never gets a chance to boot his grounder and it's 0-0 (instead of 1-0, as it was because DeRosa botched it).

My girlfriend made a great point tonight:

You know what they need? Ozzie Guillen. Or Lou to go on an Ozzie-like rant, at least. They're playing with asses so tight, it's making ME constipated. They need to loosen the **** up -- and so do their fans. That's where Piniella comes in. He needs to do something crazy-stupid, just like Guillen would do, to throw the attention off his players and on ... anything else, whatever.

But you're right, panic sets in as soon as the slighest break goes the Dodgers' way. That's why both of these games have been blowouts. It should be like 3-0 right now, but the Cubs fell apart as soon as the first error was made.

Now, they need something crazy. That's how the Red Sox and White Sox both overcame the overwhelming pressure. The Idiots. Cowboy Up. Ozzie going bat-**** crazy.

That's the only way the Cubs are ever going to break through: Being too dumb to know there's any pressure.

I said to my wife when they got down 5-0 the game was over. But it's only the second inning, she said.

Doesn't matter, I replied. They won't score a run. Turns out I was way off on that one, though. ;D

The way everyone reacted yesterday when it was 4-2, the game was over.

Which is what we're saying. One of the strengths of the Cubs this year has been patience at the plate. They drew more walks this year than any in the last 30, I believe. But when they've gotten behind in the playoffs, the hitters have panicked. Swinging at pitches in the dirt, showing no patience at all. They've had three walks in the two games.
