Crowd bombards female hockey player with vulgar chants

This is absolutely disgusting. A group of fans of the Armstrong Central High School hockey team harrassed the goaltender for Mars, a girl, with vulgar chants. (FYI: Both schools are north of Pittsburgh).

Armstrong Central fans have been banned from upcoming games, but that isn't nearly enough. Were there no adults present to deal with this ****?

That’s horrible. It’s been more than a decade since I covered high school hockey, but our area had females on just about every team. I don’t remember ever hearing anything like this. Maybe (probably?) kids shouted misogynistic stuff at them and I didn’t hear it, but never was there an arena-wide chant like this.

Armstrong's coach should have gone to the refs, got the clock stopped, and dealt with that himself. The parents should have been there before he could do that.

I believe the PIHL and PIAA are separate organizations with different requirements. The PIAA would require at least one administrator present at every game.

Unless things have changed, yes, they are separate entities.

Neutral is right. Hell, the officials should have stopped it without prompting by the Armstrong coach. Part of their job is to protect the athletes on the ice. They failed to do that.

I know hockey is not a PIAA/WPIAL sport, but they could step in and sanction Armstrong Central teams (i.e. no postseason play).

Pull your kids off the ice until the chanting stops or the stands are emptied.

Part of the point of organized sports in schools is to teach sportsmanship.

To the crowd, too, if necessary.

This might be true to some extent. But situationally. ... this was a group of 50 high school kids. High school kids acting ****ty, and feeling emboldened to behave in a way they never would when they are alone because they are part of a group, is the kind of thing that happened before Trump, too. I agree that societally we have normalized a lot of terrible things recently, and Trump's behavior has set a bad tone, but things just as wrong happened I was in high school 40 years ago when you got groups of kids together. If anything it sometimes got less attention than it does now.

I think some of the assholes have been emboldened, but Ragu is right that students have been chanting ****ty things at sporting events for a very long time. We did it when I was in high school. I remember hearing it in college, too. I don't ever remember something quite on this level.

That is why I ask about the adults. Teenagers are going to do dumb stuff. The adults in the arena should be stepping in. If there were no school administrators present, there were still parents, coaches, and referees. This is a tremendous failure by the coaches and officials.

I wouldn't want to be a fifteen year old now. Or to have a fifteen year old now, for that matter. Tough world out there, very different from my Leave it to Beaver childhood.
