Made a laptop switch over the summer and now that I'm getting into season previews and such, I'm consulting my Coaches List that I had on file with phone #s for the 10 schools we cover...somehow in the switchover, I ended up with an old copy of this file, so I've lost more than half my coaches #s...ughh!!!

E-mail every important document to yourself using a Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail service. Works for equipment switches, breakdowns and layoffs.

Even better: Dropbox. Automatically syncs documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer to the cloud.

It doesn't help flex at this point, but this is exactly what I do.

I find many coaches respond a lot faster to emails than phone calls.

yes, my list had emails and phone #s...now I'm seeing coaches from 5 years ago on this list I have :)

I think I had two files of similar name and a mistakenly emailed myself the old list. Stupid me.

Do the school websites at least have a list of staff emails?

Think of it as an opportunity - sure it is a hassle - especially when time is short, but it also might give you a chance to reacquaint yourself with some people you haven't touched base with recently.
Hell you go through any contact list at a newspaper and it's like the scene from Major League - "This guy here is DEAD!"

Better yet, create a Google Docs spreadsheet that you can continually update.

Even better, save the info - numbers, emails - on your iPhone.
If you don't have one, go get one.

I clicked on this thread thinking you were going to complain that you couldn't see.

Is this different than any other phone? I ask because I am not an Apple person, so maybe that loads it onto some giant massive land where you can find it even if your phone goes through the washing machine.

Among other ways, when you connect your iPhone to your laptop/desktop, it will sync your music, apps, contacts, etc. to the computer. If something happens to that info on either device, you can restore to the last sync.

You can also set up your Google Docs spreadsheet to be viewable by coworkers. Not sure how big your shop is, flex, but then you guys can all pool together your info.

As did I, but this is worse.

Good luck in recovery mode.

I usually just save everything in google docs, that way I have access no matter where I am.

My contacts are all in my Google address book, which syncs with my iPhone thanks to Microsoft Exchange-style functionality. Highly recommend it, works amazingly well for me.

And I'll take this moment to issue a PSA about backups:

Do your backups. Set an alert in your calendar (on your computer or phone) and take 15 minutes a month to back up all your stuff to an external drive or burn a disc. Do this for your home and work computers, and your phone. Don't forget to back up your e-mail, too, if you use an e-mail client.
