If you’re a hard-news hound who loves college basketball, this is your job. The Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, N.Y., is searching for a fearless reporter who can dig beneath the surface to tell our readers what’s going on with the Binghamton University basketball program. Tons of news on this beat, including an NCAA Tournament appearance this year and three off-the-court incidents that have kept us hopping. Do your homework and tell us how you would have handled them. We work in a fast-paced, Web-first environment. The successful candidate will have the clips to show he/she knows how to break big stories and will have a working knowledge of social-media tools. You will be expected to blog and interact with the community in other ways. Our beat reporter will be focused on BU basketball – men and women -- but will cover the athletic program as a whole and help with other assignments during the off-season. Please email your resume, letter and writing samples to Al Vieira, Assistant Managing Editor, [email protected]. No phone calls, please. The Press & Sun-Bulletin is an equal opportunity employer.

Another Division I beat opens up. Good thing or bad thing?

It's certainly part of the weeding-out process ... but the wording of that just strikes a nerve.

I don't believe this individual will travel, but as referenced, the off-the-court issues with Broadus' team will at least give you something to do when not on the road.

My guess is Gannett cut too much in some places and opened up a few jobs... emphasis on a few.

Binghamton is a beautiful area, about a couple hours from Cooperstown.

Binghamton is a beautiful area? Since when? It's just another in the long line of towns in the Rust Belt that have seen much better days.

Have you seen the scenery around Binghamton? When I say that, I don't necessarily talk about the town... I talk about stuff to do. Baseball HOF is about an hour and a half away on a good day, for example.

Regardless, people will differ. Good luck in the search and may this thread end well. :)

Well, the good news is that you're 3.5 hours away from NYC and just 90 minutes from Scranton.

Drop by the office when you're in Scranton. Michael would love to see you. :)

Scranton's more like an hour away (depending on how bad the construction back-ups on 81 are). You can make it to New York in 3 hours, and Philly's about the same. And yes, Cooperstown's about an hour and a half away.

Fargo is only a few hours away.

Okay, that's funny.

I'm not sure that's possible, according the Gannett shareholders.

Yeah, but somebody's got to put out the paper. And Gannett tends to go overboard on a lot of things.

And Tahoe is a mere 15 minutes away.

You had to know that was coming.

Of course. I'm surprised it took that long.

Is the first thread in history where a job's selling point is it is less than 90 minutes from Scranton? Isn't that the third seal of the apocalypse?

OK, here are some answers to questions posed on this thread:

- The gig's opening had nothing to do with Gannett's cuts. The job opened up because I decided to go to graduate school after five very good years at the paper.
- I traveled to virtually every America East Conference road game in four years (I missed two due to odd schedule conflicts, one due to bad weather) and all postseason (the conference tournament, which this season is in Hartford) and to the NCAAs last season.
- I also covered the Binghamton women's team and Olympic sports (which aren't bad). I did assorted high school coverage and other off-beat stuff as well.
- They do take Binghamton hoops coverage seriously. You get space to write good stories. And there is a lot of on- and off-court stuff going on (like the ad said, three incidents last year alone). There's a lot of opportunity to get some good clips at this job.
- The guys in the sports department are fantastic to work with. It's a good corner of the room to be in.
- Yeah, it's Gannett. Yeah, there are downsides to the job, like any other job. I'm not going to rip on my old newsroom in public.
- A word about Binghamton - it is what it is. It's not the trendiest, coolest place to live. But there are worse places to live. It's affordable and centrally located. Winters are cold and snowy. But summer and fall in Upstate New York are fantastic.

Again, if anyone has any other questions on this gig. feel free to PM me.

Well, it's good to see Gannett is hiring just the same. Thanks for checking in, Jimmy.
