When former Vice President **** Cheney releases his memoir early next week, it may cause the second earthquake in Washington, D.C., this month.

“There are gonna be heads exploding all over Washington,’’ Cheney told NBC’s Jamie Gangel in an exclusive interview that will air on NBC’s “Dateline” at 10 p.m. ET Aug. 29.

In the book, titled “In My Time,’’ Cheney addresses a broad range of topics, including the attacks of Sept. 11; a secret resignation letter he kept in a safe in case he experienced catastrophic health issues, and his thoughts about former President George W. Bush and ex-Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell. The 46th vice president discusses those topics and more in his candid, unapologetic interview with Gangel, and he’ll likely have more to say when he appears live on TODAY with Matt Lauer on Aug. 30, the day his book hits stores.

Former Vice President **** Cheney says in a new memoir that he urged President George W. Bush to bomb a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor site in June 2007. But, he wrote, Mr. Bush opted for a diplomatic approach after other advisers — still stinging over “the bad intelligence we had received about Iraq’s stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction” — expressed misgivings.

“I again made the case for U.S. military action against the reactor,” Mr. Cheney wrote about a meeting on the issue. “But I was a lone voice. After I finished, the president asked, ‘Does anyone here agree with the vice president?’ Not a single hand went up around the room.”

Mr. Bush chose to try diplomatic pressure to force the Syrians to abandon the secret program, but the Israelis bombed the site in September 2007. Mr. Cheney’s account of the discussion appears in his autobiography, “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir,” which is to be published by Simon & Schuster next week. A copy was obtained by The New York Times.

When Cheney says this, I'm expecting it to be a pop-up book and the first thing that pops up is Cheney with a shot gun pointed at your head.

In discussing the much-disputed “16 words” about Iraq’s supposed hunt for uranium in Niger that were included in President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address to help justify the eventual invasion, Mr. Cheney said that unlike other aides, he saw no need to apologize for making that claim. He writes that Ms. Rice eventually came around to his view.

“She came into my office, sat down in the chair next to my desk and tearfully admitted I had been right,” he wrote.

Does anybody really believe Rice started crying over that?

**** Cheney is the type of jerk who demands loyalty from others but shows none himself. I'm sure we'll see his lack of loyalty to others throughout this book.

I've long thought Bush might have been a decent president if he had made a better VP choice. Bush allowing Cheney to run roughshod is one of the biggest disappointments to me in the last 25 years.

Cheney's always been a smart operator who knew how to play to the media. Who else would leak something to the NY Times then use that "story" as proof that action was needed without disclosing that he was the original source? Who else would time his book's publication around the 10th anniversary of 9/11? Who else would wait three years to complete his memoir allowing him time to settle all of the scores from earlier books from members of the administration? And time to second-guess how the succeeding administration handled his unfinished business.
I really would have liked to have read the chapter on bin Laden that was written before the Seals road trip to Abbottabod.

Every single Republican Presidential candidate must be ready to turn a microwave oven on right next to Cheney and his pacemaker. If there's one thing they don't want, it's a lot of publicity for the previous administration's least popular figure. They're hoping to shove 2001-2008 down the memory hole, and who can blame them?
