Not necessarily, but these schools have been aware of these problems for years. As have the activists who've been pressing them on it.

So none of this is taking anyone by surprise, except people who haven't been paying attention.

This isn't just about pulling down statues and plaques and changing a few names. The merely symbolic stuff won't cut it now.

There has to be some real institutional change at these places, including, as I said, devoting some of these huge endowments to reparations. Maybe proportional to what the school earned from slavery. Maybe in the form of free tuition in perpetuity for black American students.

I don't know, but the time has long passed for the gestural or the cosmetic .

I think this is mostly right.

But I also think the name of the school might be leveraged against the school to bring about these changes, too.

The University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin, who was not a Quaker. In fact, he owned two house slaves, then became an abolitionist later in life. Several of the university's original trustees had connections to slavery as well.

The Wharton School of Business, which is a part of the university, was named for industrialist Joseph Wharton. He was among the founders of Swarthmore College. Quaker or not, his family may have enslaved people. Aside: He's the great-great-grandfather of Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen.

Opinion: Since we're canceling people for racism, can we talk about Charles Darwin?

Even by the most generous of measures, the intellectual and philosophical heritage of Charles Darwin is one of the most hideously racist legacies one can fathom. And yet, his inherently racist dogma is not only presented in public schools across America, it is state and federal policy that every student in America demonstrate proficiency in understanding and applying his dangerous ideology.

Set aside the colonialist rage against the Spanish conquistadors just long enough to recognize that it was Charles Darwin himself who wrote in his diary after encountering the "savages" in Tierra del Fuego, "one can hardly make oneself believe that they are fellow creatures."

Darwin felt such a sense of ethnic superiority over these "savages," he predicted in "The Descent of Man" that, "the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world."
