I don't think I'd call it the biggest failure of all-time, but North Carolina and its talented freshmen class was ranked 19th in the 2001-02 preason AP poll and finished 8-20 -- first losing season in 38 years, most loses in a single season, etc. etc.

It's up there for a pretty big collapse.  

I think the failure of the pollsters was greater.

That whole freakin Dan and Dave campagin was cramed down our throats and all we heard about was how great Dan O'Brien was, maybe the greatest athlete ever.

He's got my vote.
That whole freakin Dan and Dave campagin was cramed down our throats and all we heard about was how great Dan O'Brien was, maybe the greatest athlete ever.
Then he lays an egg in Barcelona, right? Maybe I'm off on the place, but he laid a monster egg.

Actually, Dan never made it to Barcelona. He no-heighted in the pole vault in the Olympic Trials and failed to make the team.

However, he really was the greatest athlete ever (at least at the time). At a meet later that summer, Dan broke the world record in the decathlon. And four years later, he won his Olympic gold in Atlanta.

Really, his only failure was choking under the giant spotlight of the Dan vs. Dave campaign. But that was a pretty big honkin' failure.

Soccer was a medium shot to get out of its group; losing out to Ghana instead of the Czechs was.
As for 2004 hoops, the handwriting was on the wall from previous problems -- from Olympics, to Pan-Am to World Championships... it wasn't a matter of if, but when

I was going to say Shawn Abner, but he did spend parts of five seasons in the majors, and there are quite a few No. 1 draft picks who never did that.

It's been a few years so I couldn't remember. There are too many meaningless song lyrics and movie quotes taking up the space that should be reserved for Dan and Dave.
