Android has a Do Not Disturb function that hides texts, calls and emails but I don't believe there's an auto response

AT&T has had a do not disturb with auto-reply feature in an app since at least 2012. It's part of their "It Can Wait" anti-texting-and-driving campaign.

The glove box works wonders for that. Or I just hand my phone to one of my kids, that ensures I won't get it back anytime soon.

Seriously. I totally judge people on their phone use. It says so much about them.

Other than that, I don't care. In fact, I hate when people like my mom complain about phones and start with the "doesn't anyone TALK to each other anymore??!!??!" ****.

Totally agree on the driving front, of course. The rest of the time, for me at least, how attached someone is to their phone just says a lot about them. And I'll confess that when I see a couple out at a restaurant, say, and they're both on their phones, I think: They're ****ed.

It looks like this is an opt-in feature, meaning a user has to activate it before driving. If Apple was truly concerned about user safety, iPhones would automatically detect how fast they're moving and switch to "do not disturb" automatically. Anyone riding a bus would then be able to switch that mode off, rather than the other way around.

I think the users who most need to avoid the distraction are those least likely to use the function.

Edited to add: The "do not disturb" function will be activated when a phone is Bluetoothed to a vehicle. I have that capability but don't use it because I thought having calls/texts/etc. displayed on my car's screen would be more distracting and less difficult to ignore than my phone.

Exactly. Features like the one that started this thread are just public relations bull**** that won't really stop the folks who are most often guilty of distracted driving.

I was driving home from work one day. From the time I got off at the train station to the time I got to the grocery store parking lot 20 minutes later - this is about 6-6:30 p.m., I had a series of five emails from work, looking for someone to take a task on that night, culminating in, "Does anyone know where DW is? Has anyone heard from him?"

Now, that's email. But people by and large have developed this expectation that people should respond to their texts in damn near real time. If Mrs. Whitman doesn't hear back from me in 5-10 minutes, or even less sometimes, I'll get a, "Hello?" text as a follow-up.

The auto-responses really help with the social pressure to respond right away.
