The Associated Press seeks a talented and experienced newsperson for its Havana, Cuba bureau.
The successful candidate will report to the Havana bureau chief and work closely with local Spanish-language, photo and television journalists on all manner of stories out of Cuba. The reporter will file through the Latin America desk and work with editors and news leaders there. The newsperson will be expected to cover breaking news, develop long-form features and generate spot features of global interest.
Qualifications:
Fluency in Spanish is a must, as is advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Applicants should have demonstrated aggressiveness in pursuing breaking news stories, as well as an eye for features and analysis. The successful candidate should have at least three years of full-time reporting or editing experience. Ideally, the candidate would also have experience living in a developing country and working in a sensitive reporting environment. Patience, precision and the ability to see both sides of a story, are useful tools. While politics and U.S.-Cuban relations are a major part of coverage, a background covering culture, sports, and economics is also helpful. Previous international news agency work experience preferred. Candidates should be able to work quickly and under deadline pressure and also have a demonstrated ability to produce crisp, informative, big picture feature stories. The selected candidate must be able to effectivel! y manage multiple priorities with conflicting deadlines. He or she must also be able to effectively coordinate with AP staffers from other formats, and must be a creative problem-solver who can work well both independently and as a member of a team. The successful candidate must also be able to travel and work a variety of hours to meet the needs of a 24/7 news organization.
