Nationalism given a term that makes it acceptable among a certain group of scholars. European nationalism is bad and leads to unchecked hubris. But for Americans, nationalism is good because we're the exception.

We'd all love soccer if they'd just change the offside rule, and make the goal bigger to encourage more scoring. Then it would be awesome.

Mark Whicker once wrote a column (during a World Cup) in which he made a series of suggestions for broadening its appeal in the United States, each making the, well, sport more and more like Merican football, the final one being to make the ball pointed on both ends.
