NORWOOD, Colo. — At the state high-school wrestling tournament in Denver last year, three upperclassmen cornered a 13-year-old boy on an empty school bus, bound him with duct tape and sodomized him with a pencil.

For the boy and his family, that was only the beginning.

The students were from Norwood, Colo., a ranching town of about 500 people near the Telluride ski resort. Two of the attackers were sons of Robert Harris, the wrestling coach, who was president of the school board. The victim’s father was the K-12 principal.

After the principal reported the incident to police, townspeople forced him to resign. Students protested against the victim at school, put “Go to Hell” stickers on his locker and wore T-shirts that supported the perpetrators. The attackers later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

There's a cruelty with it now that is just frightening. The worst things we did were ducktaping people to the goalpost and dousing people in toilet stalls with huge buckets of ice water.

My junior year of high school there were two freshmen football players who got into it with our offensive line coach, a coach who the weight room is named after and has been at the school for 40+ years. One of the kids called him an "old piece of ****" and the other laughed like a hyena when he did it. After practice our best player (who played for awhile in the NFL) found the kid, picked him up and threw him into the dumpster.

When we got back to the locker room the kid who laughed like the hyena, walked into the varsity locker room and apologized and volunteered to let us throw him in the dumpster. Instead, they made him stand in the varsity locker room with the undershirt of our heaviest player that had been worn during practice, over his face for five minutes. He didn't complain and after his time was done, he went and found the line coach and apologized to him. I thought that was pretty cool for a 14-year-old to do.

How people come up with this malicious stuff you hear about these days is just beyond me. Just ****ing sickening...

I graduated from high school 20 years. My freshman year, we went through initiation. Some of it was simple ****, like the seniors wailing away on you for 20-30 seconds. Several of us had icy hot/ben gay smeared into our cups.

The worst was a guy got duct taped to a tree naked, then someone decided to ram a broom stick up his nether region. He had to be taken to the hospital because he was bleeding.

The next year and subsequent years, the initiations consisted of the freshmen either having to shave their heads or be completely covered in shaving cream. While still barbaric, it was so much better than what our class and the previous freshmen had to put up with.

For what it's worth, the kid that was sodomized by the broomstick didn't come back out for football after that. His family also didn't press charges.

as someone who was never a part of any team or group that did hazing I have to ask, just what is the team supposed to gain from it? If I was a freshman offensive lineman on the football team and the senior quarterback wrapped me a duct-tape, I wouldn't exactly be thinking 'I must protect this guy with my life,' I would be thinking 'this asshole wrapped me in duct-tape, I think I'm going to let this defensive lineman flatten him, 'cuz seriously, **** that guy.'

My freshman year of track in high school I wasn't hazed. They tried to bully me into quitting the team (as I described in another thread) but I wasn't hazed. I don't recall any hazing going on (this was 1984).
There was one semi-cruel punishment doled out to a junior distance runner (among the best in the county) when he mouthed off to one of the captains at an away meet -- he had to lie on his back on the bus for part of the ride home while holding a shotput over his head as the co-captains plucked out some of his leg hairs.

Sex is introduced to kids through their parents' rotten TV choices at a very young age today. Combine that with America's ingrained taste for violence, and you get what we're getting.

It's because the freshman has to earn the senior's trust. If the freshman is not willing to go through what the senior went through when he was a freshman, how can he trust him?
And no, I'm not condoning this sort of thing, just trying to explain the rationale.
I think that whole mindset is wrong and one should not do something to a teammate that he wouldn't do to a total stranger without getting arrested or sued.

This sort of stuff is certainly not limited to athletic teams. Nor is it new.

When I was in school, it was sort of accepted as part of the culture and if you went to the authorities (school or police) to complain, you were treated as an outcast, which few teenagers enjoy, either. So often the lesser of two evils was to keep quiet and be one of the boys. Then when you were the upper classmen you didn't feel so bad about dishing out under the premise of "hey, I had to put up with it when I was a freshman and I survived, so will they."

Coaches and administrators shouldn't allow this crap anymore than they allow what the basketball coach at Rutgers did last year.
