Killer in ambush may be charged in Michigan and Wisconsin

By Gina Damron and John Wisely • Free Press Staff Writers • August 2, 2008

It’s unlikely that Scott Johnson – accused of killing three teens and wounding one man during a shooting rampage in northern Michigan Thursday – will be arraigned before early next week, law enforcement officials said Saturday,

Police have said Johnson, of Iron Mountain, ambushed nine young adults -- all from Michigan -- as they swam in the Menominee River in northern Wisconsin near the Michigan border.

Brent DeBord, district attorney for Wisconsin’s Marinette County, said this morning that Johnson wouldn’t be arraigned until sometime early next week, possibly Monday. He said his office is working with Michigan’s Dickenson County Prosecutor’s Office to hash out jurisdictional issues. Since the crime happened on the river, which divides the two states, DeBord said it’s possible Johnson could be charged in both states.

But, DeBord said the shots were fired from the Wisconsin side of the river.

Killed in the shooting rampage were Bryan Mort, 19, Tiffany Pohlson, 17 and Anthony Spigarelli, 18. A fourth man, 20-year-old Daniel Gordon, was wounded, but is expected to survive.

Johnson is still in custody at the Marinette County Jail.

Marinette County Chief Deputy Jerry Sauve said Friday that Johnson walked out of the woods in camouflage and opened fire on the swimmers with a military-style assault rifle. The East Kingsford railroad bridge is a popular gathering spot for kids who like to leap from the bridge into the water.

Niagara - An unemployed former soldier authorities say donned camouflage and randomly killed three teenagers with a rifle Thursday was contemplating suicide after a woman reported he raped her the day before, the Journal Sentinel has learned.

“I think he felt like a trapped animal after (the sexual assault), and decided to do something stupid — not stupid — horrible,” Scott Johnson’s mother, Judy Johnson, said Friday.

“They (authorities) came here yesterday saying they were looking for him. They left a card and said to let him know they were looking for him. They said he talked about committing suicide,” she said.

“Obviously, he didn’t,” she said.

Authorities believe Johnson, 38, of Kingsford, Mich., shot and killed the Michigan teenagers as they hung around a favored swimming spot near a railroad bridge that spans the Menominee River about three miles west of Niagara.
