3-alarm fire at RTD printing plant

A three-alarm fire that erupted yesterday in a press at the Richmond Times-Dispatch printing plant in Hanover County filled the facility with smoke and water and forced the newspaper to print its Sunday edition elsewhere.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze, which started shortly after noon at 8460 Times-Dispatch Blvd., off U.S. 301. About 50 people were inside the building at the time.

The fire apparently ignited in a folder on one of the newspaper's three presses. The unit was printing classified ads for the Sunday edition when the blaze started, said Thomas A. Silvestri, publisher and president.

The newspaper made arrangements with the Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina -- which like The Times-Dispatch is owned by Media General Inc. -- to finish the 66-page classified run and truck it to Richmond. The 40-page news sections were to be printed by The Washington Post at its Springfield plant.

Glad nobody was hurt, and that they'll be able to get the paper out.

Apparently, they had a 6 p.m. deadline last night and will have a 6 p.m. deadline tonight. Almost all features in Sunday's paper and, unless they change the deadline, no NASCAR story in Monday's paper. I guess times like make you glad there's the Web site.

Mike, you don't staff NASCAR west of the Rockies, correct?

Most people who want that info will have watched/listened to the race anyway, I think. And having that story's an unaffordable luxury right now.
