Brookings South Dakota recently lost its century-old newspaper, the Brookings Register, but a longtime board regular and his dedicated crew of newsies started a new newspaper, online for the first few months, and today the Brookings Beacon delivered its first print edition.

The Brookings Beacon

If all has gone correctly, you’re now holding the very first Brookings Beacon — Volume 1, Edition 1.

Since mid-August, this has been a labor of love for me and my wife and partner, Nichole.

Now it is — quite literally — in your hands.

As Nikky and I have traveled down this road, filled with logistics and meetings and loans and the occasional mishap, we keep telling people we’re 85 percent excited and 15 percent terrified. And so long as we keep that ratio solid, we figure we are doing the right thing.

But as I sat down to write this message to you, I dug up an image someone sent me back in August, and I was reminded that our light was falling on the right footsteps.

Way, way back in June of 1890, another set of partners set off down this same path — of securing a news source for this territory. And there in the flag — right at the top of the front page — of their third edition was a message. I like to imagine to the readers sure, but also, I am certain, to the two newspapermen themselves.

It read:
“Be Just and Fear Not.”

Impressive work, Josh, and amazing dedication to your hometown. Even the boys of summer agree.

No outing! :)

Seriously, congrats. Pulling for everyone up there.
