2026 Winter Olympics thread: Now that's Italian!

Opening Ceremony Friday. Good as time as any to move discussion from the Olympic sports topic.

This will be a ****show like all Olympics, but at least not a capital letter ****SHOW like the World Cup will be in this dumpster fire of a country.

Kind of strange this will be the second straight Winter Games, Tirico isn't on-site for the duration. Had to bail out of Beijing because of the non-sense and Covid four years ago, and in Santa Clara through Sunday. At least he won't have to worry about jet lag in SLC in four years.

Also, the Games technically start today with round robin play in Mixed Doubles Curling. But don't "officially" start until Friday.

While I think anchoring the Winter Games in a big city is probably a wise move these days, I didn't realize Cortina is 250 miles away from Milan. They're really stretching it out. Whistler is just 75 miles from Vancouver. Park City to SLC 30 miles.
Almost makes me think SF should make a run one of these years. Tahoe IS more than 15 minutes away, but just 188 miles. They have the arenas, build a luge/bobsled facility in the South Bay and its doable.
I do miss the "cozy villages" of Innsbruck and Lillehammer though. Seemed a lot more "wintery."

Lillehammer was a lot more spread out than it looked on TV. It's in a valley, and event venues ran its length for around 30 miles,

Wait until LA 2028 when you have events spread from there to Oklahoma City to St. Louis to Nashville.

It does make the Games a lot more "digestible" for cities/countries wanting to host. One city's taxpayers don't get stuck with added taxes or building all of the new facilities. In some ways, makes the event "bigger" - kind of like what is happening with the World Cup.

Actually, 2030 is in the French Alps and SLC in 2034.

Well, the surf is seldom up in fhe Seine. When they debuted beach volleyball in '96, they called the venue they built out on the fringes of metro Atlanta -- Atlanta Beach.

So, a Lindsey Vonn question. Sounds like she is going to take what will amount to a ceremonial run down the mountain with her bad knee. Understandable for her after all she did to get back to championship form.

But if she chose to withdraw, does another U.S. skier get to take her place? Or is there just one less competitor in that event?

I don’t know how that works in the Olympics.

Ah, wife found it on Peacock. She was born in England, so happy to see the Brits on TV. We visited Norway in September. Familiar places.
