IOC: 'Can't give assurances' on Peng Shuai case

On the one hand, this could be incredibly awkward for athletes participating in a country where a fellow athlete is being held hostage by the government, on the other hand it promises to be an incredible hot mess - which always makes for the best Olympics.

China is run by totalitarians who jail human righs lawyers, torture and kill minorities in concentration camps, and run over their own citizens with tanks.

There, ****ing fixed it for everyone.

I would say I'm looking forward to seeing how NBC whitewashes all of that but that would require watching, and I'd rather not except for maybe a hockey game or two.

I love the Olympics. Just love them - especially since we can now watch so many events live. Flat-water rowing is on at 3 am? I'm there. Biathlon at 6 am? I'll set an alarm.

That said, these Games (and the upcoming World Cup in Qatar) are going to be a cluster****. I'll feel dirty for watching. But I know I'll still watch.

Yeah. Especially since it's the winter games. I love those sports but I never watch them outside the Olympics

You sound like my late father. He'd call me all the time during an Olympics, retired and watching at his kitchen counter.
"Hey, are you watching the ski jumping?"
"No Dad, I'm at work."
"Well it's really good, punch it up on your computer when you can."

That was his most common refrain: "punch it up on your computer." He would also call me every time without fail after a new HBO Real Sports to tell me to watch a segment, I'd tell him I still didn't get HBO, he say to just punch it up on my computer.

I was expecting something a bit more graphic and obvious. They worry kids are going to be watching curling and start googling?

As difficult as the omicron variant is to deal with, I can't help but feel that all of this is yet another significant global marketing opportunity that Gary Bettman and the NHL have botched. The whole quarantine thing seems to be a deal breaker for them and only them, but not lugers or skiers or women's hockey players. And those games could easily be made up by pushing the playoffs back. The NHL needs events like this. It's fading behind soccer in popularity, and though baseball may be slipping just as fast, I have a lot more faith in baseball given the popularity of drinking outside on a nice day. The half-hearted way the NHL handled these Olympics even before omicron is telling. Like citing bad roads for cancelling a drive they didn't want to make anyway. But at some point, they to need to appeal to some, any audience other than white folks north of the 40th parallel.

Seems pretty late in the game to get our "junior" team together for a Winter Olympics no?
