Too bad Munich failed. Would have been the first city to host summer and winter games.

Obviously the games in the early 1940s would have been canceled anywhere they were scheduled, but it's somewhat odd that from 1936 through 1944 they were held or scheduled in the following countries:

Germany (winter 36)
Germany (summer 36)
Japan (winter 40)
Japan (summer 40)
Italy (winter 44)

Not really surprised. It's been Sydney, Utah, Athens, Italy, China, Canada, London, Russia, Brazil and back to Asia. The U.S. is due for another Summer Games sometime, right? Apparently not until at least 2024 due to problems between the USOC and the IOC.

I'm really looking forward to getting up at 3 a.m. to watch the hockey tournament on whatever obscure cable channel NBC decides to farm it out to that year.

In reality, this is going to be kind of neat for us. We have an adopted son from China, and we spent a few days in Beijing three months before the 2008 Games (and saw a lot of the Oly sites), so we kind of re-lived the trip watching the TV coverage. By 2018, we will probably also have made a similar trip to South Korea, so another chance to have a vicarious cultural journey for two weeks.

Ebersol did get the IOC to move swimming to the AM in Beijing so who knows - should get live skilling in the East Coast.

Ebersol's replacement said a couple of weeks back that, beginning in 2014, every event would be live on some NBC platform. So they've finally gotten the message.

Supposedly the USOC and IOC are ironing out their differences and 2020 isn't off the table for a potential U.S. bid.
Hell, they should give Chicago another shot - I imagine their local leaders were a little pissed to realize they had not shot due to the IOC/USOC spat.
