I don't believe Secretariat was in this one, so Justify must not feel too bad. It figures the only ticket I cashed was a 1-6 exacta my daughter in France, a big Pats fan, had me buy for her.

What a day. Hit the tri right before the Belmont, then was alive to five horses to close the Pick 4 ($640 for Justify, and $6,800 for my best price). Made about a grand yesterday. Fake drinks are on me!

Was just looking at the winning times at the Belmont since Secretariat. In the 45 years since then, 7 horses have run within 3 seconds on his 2:24. One has run within 2 seconds--Easy Goer in 1989 at 2:26 flat. God, what an incredible sporting performance that was. I'm glad to have been able to witness it.

Not meaning to defer the conversation from Justify. Was rooting hard for him yesterday, and happy to see another Triple Crown winner. Ran a great race from post one--got to the lead, eased a little to save energy for the finish, and brought it home.

After all these years and near misses, to have 2 in 4 years is pretty damn sweet.

To be fair, raw times, while not entirely useless, are not a great measure. Surface speed and composition changes day to day, let alone year to year and decade to decade.

That said it’s still one of the most dominating sporting performances in history.

True, looking at times in a simple comparison of numbers isn't the be-all-end-all judgment, but when you look at where Justify is listed in his three Triple Crown races, there's nothing at all to indicate greatness except that he beat all the others he faced.

In the last 10 years, I've mostly looked at 3-year-old Thoroughbreds much the way I look at rock n' roll music: they don't make 'em the way they used to.

I disagree entirely with that. He’s done something incredibly difficult. Didn’t start until February and won six races in 112 days, with four grade 1 races and a Triple Crown. And defeated the champion 2-year-old of last season (Good Magic) twice.

If that’s not great, I don’t know what is.

On the other hand, he needs to beat older horses to be an all-time great. Probably won’t get that opportunity until the Breeder’s Cup Classic. Would shock me if he faced older before that, considering all that money out there over he summer in 3-year-old races.

The sheer hysteria over Secretariat (what an exotic word to learn as a kid), time and place, years since the previous Triple Crown winner and, some here will recall, Turcotte never once went to the whip during the Triple Crown. For my money, the greatest thoroughbred performance ever. Al Oerter's four straight Olympic discus golds is the greatest human sports achievement.
