WaPo planned ahead to be able to throw this up on Twitter so fast after the announcement. Great job in that regard.

Tom Hanks not nominated, nor was Robert Redford. I guess the voters went for Bruce Dern over Redford in the lifetime achievement category.

Meryl Streep over Emma Thompson is a bit of an upset as well. And no James Gandolfini in Supporting Actor surprises me.

Inside Lllewyn Davis also snubbed (they only used 9 slots for Best Picture), as was Paul Greengrass for director.

Hard to say anyone was "snubbed" - just a lot of quality films out this year.

Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may nominate up to 10 films for best picture, but only chose nine this year. A notable exclusion was the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," which had won some top critics' awards.

Leto was fabulous. There's no way the Oscar people give him this. He's not part of the fraternity.

Is Blanchett the biggest lock?

She was great, but Amy Adams was also great.
Sally Hawkins very deserving in supporting role in 'Blue Jasmine.'

If not Leto, Fassbender? Playing a brutal slave owner? Hill? Playing a coked-up hound? The Somali pirate? Cooper?

I think Leto is going to win.

Normally, I would agree, but the Academy loves when a straight actor throws himself into a role like that. I think Leto will win.

I think Best Actor and Supporting Actress are the toughest categories.

I read somewhere that Robert Redford refused to participate in any award promotion for "All is Lost" which I kind of rspect, but I can't help but wonder if it cost him a nomination.

One of my buddies saw an early screening of Nebraska and got 75 to 1 odds on June Squibb winning best supporting actress. I havn't seen the movie, but I've seen her listed as someone who could surprise in a few stories.

Predictions
12 Years a Slave
Chiwetel Ejiofor
Amy Adams
Bradley Cooper
Julia Roberts
David O. Russell

I liked American Hustle, but it doesn't seem like a Best Picture winner.

I think it does. In tone, it reminded me a great deal of "Argo" from a year ago - a crowd-pleaser for grown-ups.

Jonah Hill's nomination makes me smile thinking back to my favorite line from the movies this year:

"God, it's me, Jonah Hill ... from 'Moneyball.'"

I could see American Hustle winning, I'm just not sure it deserves to win. I thought Wolf of Wall Street was a better movie.

I didn't get that, but that's natural. People vary. We'll see which way more voters leaned.

Oh, there's no question American Hustle will get more votes than Wolf of Wall Street. Wolf is too dark to win Best Picture or at least, there will be enough people put off by the sex and language that it would seem highly unlikely that it would win.

I tend to think American Hustle will beat 12 Years a Slave and win. I wasn't implying that American Hustle wasn't a great movie, it just wasn't the best movie of the year, in my opinion...
