Roy Hibbert had eight points and eight rebounds tonight. It's telling for the Pacers that it's considered a bounce back game (statistically speaking) for him.
I wonder if they're trying to get Frank Vogel fired, but for the life of me, I wouldn't know why.
I just wonder if the chemistry got completely screwed up bringing in Turner and Bynum. I saw one story where it's intimated that the players consider Turner a selfish player and a really crappy teammate.
As good a theory as any as far as Turner is concerned, although I'd submit that maybe it's less Turner than it is resentment over the departure of Danny Granger, who was popular in the locker room.
Bynum? Maybe, I know he has a toxic rep, but he's barely played. Their chemistry must have been super fragile to begin with if all it took was those changes.
Still doesn't explain the massive downfall of Hibbert. I covered the Pacers-Thunder game a week ago and he looked like a shell of a player.
Chemistry is more likely to get screwed up beginning inside the locker room than on the floor. The story I referenced noted that since joining the Pacers Turner had just one assist on a bucket by Hibbert.
Theories on the downfall of the Pacers:
-- Granger trade.
-- Bynum signing.
-- Allegation Paul George got a stripper pregnant and tried to pay her $1 million to have an abortion.
-- Paul George getting catfished into sending a **** pic to a guy.
-- C.J. Watson's injury. (Though he's back.)
-- That GQ pick with the starting lineup looking like a New Jack Swing band (which led to a great Twitter exchange the other night adapting New Jack bands to the Pacers, such as No Edition, Phony! Phoni! Phone! and, obviously, Another Bad Creation).
-- A general inability to handle being the favorite. (After all, none of these guys came into the NBA with the expectation of being a superstar, in particular Paul George.)
-- Brian Shaw no longer around as an assistant.
-- Orlando Johnson being released. (No **** -- George bemoaned not having him around anymore. Can you imagine any superstar feeling pain that the 12th guy got cut?)
I have no doubt in my mind that if the Pacers don't make the conference finals -- and for sure if they can't even beat Atlanta -- that Vogel is gone. Part of it is that, indeed, you can't fire the players, especially when four of the starters are locked into multiyear deals. Also, part of that is watching bench players thrive elsewhere yet die when they come to Indiana, and Vogel's general inability to find the mental buttons to push to right the ship. Maybe no coach could handle this -- certainly, Slick Leonard (now a radio analyst) said he would be hard-pressed to figure out what to do. But it may be that Vogel isn't ready to be a championship-level coach. I'm not saying he should be fired, or that it's all his fault, but that's just how these things seem to go.
