Even non-cycling fans should be made aware that at this very moment in EBF France a remarkable sports achievement is going down: Belgian Tom Boonen is rolling away with an amazing victory in the Queen of the Classics, Paris-Roubaix, by soloing away for more than 50K.

Incredible ride.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Spring Classics edition

In winning his record-tying 4th "Hell of the North" by 1:45, Boonen buries his checkered past featuring hookers and cocaine, and instead goes down in cycling history as having ridden arguably the greatest ride in pro cycling in decades.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Spring Classics edition

Amazing ride by Boonen today. I love the Classics. They are true bike races. Unlike grand tour stages where you have a breakaway, 100-mile procession, catch and actual race for about 250 yards, the Classics are about strong riders individually crushing the competition.

The only active participant who writes about his sport better than Doug Glanville (did) is...Ted King:

Although I've never raced in a crit, and this video shows pretty much why, I do enjoy watching. It's a true race where the strongest/boldest come to the front and spectator friendly on a good course.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Spring Classics edition

My buddy Carlos Alzate from the squad that stays at my house, Team Exergy, won the Speedweek race in SC tonight. I'm stoked.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Spring Classics edition

SPOILER:

Taylor Phinney wins Giro d'Italia prologue TT.

Giro Stage 2 underway.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

Oddly, the mayor of the town that hosts tomorrow's stage has died of a heart attack today during a charity bike ride on the course. And tomorrow marks the 3rd-stage anniversary of Wouter Weylandt's death. #108

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

Spoiler:

T Phinney, up front, pink jersey, drops his chain in the last 10K.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

Apparently, he hit the deck as well.

Didn't take Vaughters 15 seconds to hit teh Twitters to complain about TP getting towed back to the peloton.

Jonathan Vaughters ‏ @Vaughters
So I suppose now is a good moment to impose that "no help from the caravan" rule. Fair?

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

He's riding back up to the front, though, in a train with his teammates. Kind of amazing.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

BTW, the NBC mothership will be showing today's stage at 2 p.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. God's time.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

Holy hell great finish!

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

Crazy finish.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

I'm gonna guess those ribs are broken.

Re: 2012 Rolling cycling thread -- Giro/Tour of Cali edition

T. Phinney, still in the pink, leads at the beginning of Stage 3.
