We're starting our engines and there's no thread on this yet?? (or am I missing it?)

I just want to know: If Jim Nabors ever dies, who is going to sing the song?

WTVD in Raleigh cut into the race coverage to cover a murder-suicide. WTF?

EDIT: Oh, and the incident happened 2 and a half hours ago.

Why wouldn't they cut in? The murder happened in a public location (Target) where shoppers witnessed the whole thing. And the store is now shut down. Of course WTVD is going to break in with that story. They would be stupid not to.

Because it's a) old already, b) there's no threat to the public if the gunmen offed himself, which they knew by the time they cut in, and c) no one watching the race is going to be heading off to the SuperTarget in the middle of it. Breaking in is not understanding the audience watching the race. They could easily insert a scroll and direct people to one of their sub channels instead of interrupting race coverage.

It wasn't the last lap of the race. It was a significant news story. The store was shut down. The station completely gets the race audience because it clearly understands that not too many households are watching it. The ratings suck. I guarantee you that very few viewers are calling WTVD to complain about a brief interruption.

Edit: Sorry for the threadjack

Try cutting into a NASCAR race in this region. Not kidding.

Dunno why TVD would deem this worth interrupting network programming. But since TVD is an ABC O&O, there will be no word from the powers-to-be.

Oh, I get NASCAR. I live in a similar market. The affiliate I worked at would never have cut into a race.

As irrelevant as the 500 has become, the ratings likely spiked with the break-in.

Thing is, that it happened in Apex makes it a bigger event that if it had occurred in either Raleigh or Durham. It's not as if Apex is typically a hub for news.

I guess it's a sign how far Indy has fallen when fifth place gets a longer interview than the winner.

Maybe I'm just not an IndyCar guy, but I was mostly bored by the race. Franchitti's dominance probably didn't help. What drama there was was destroyed by that crash on 198. Makes me understand why NASCAR does green-white-checker, although I'm still not completely sold on it.

But at least Danica was far enough out of the race that there wasn't a lot of time spent obsessing on her.

How does that dude survive the crash?
It was just the capsule, everything else had been ripped off and he gets out of the wreck and waves to the crowd.
Just astonishing.

Looking at it again, it's probably because the underside of the chassis hit the fence. If he'd spun one more time, it would have been head first and that might have been fatal.

Even seen a shot of a flipped-over Indy car and it appears that the driver's head is supporting the car? I'm amazed they walk away from that. Maybe the driver is being supported better by the belts better than it appears but I imagine it's rather freaky to be sliding upside down in an Indy car and feeling your helmet scraping along the pavement.

Remember these cars are designed to fly apart like that. Still a horrible crash, but there is a lot of protection around the driver, which is why the capsule didn't break apart.

So the race broadcast and the AP reported that Danica finished 5th, but now the Indycar.com site shows her coming in 6th. Anyone know which is right and what happened?
