Because the mass popularity of baseball predates the modern investment in collegiate sports, while basketball does not.
People are more selfish than they are biased. They like their college hoops. The NBA's product is as good as it's been in awhile, and yet, because of the ****ty way pro hoops coverage evolved, one's knowledge of many of the league's best teams is marginal.
