Why weren't Marlins required to interview white candidates?

So the Marlins fire Joe Girardi and turn around and hire Fredi Gonzalez. Apparently the deal with Gonzalez had been in the works, so they didn't have to interview anyone? If the Marlins had fired Gonzalez and hired Girardi without interview anyone else, they'd be under fire right now. Why is this OK? There are several white candidates more qualified than Gonzalez that didn't get interviewed.

Wow.

Snoopy, do you know anything about Fredi Gonzalez, other than his hispanic last name?

Sorry you got passed over Snoopy. I'm sure you'll get the next one. Make sure to point out your Irish Wolfhound blood.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the exception to the minority rule is if you promote from within...

I'm assuming this would apply even if they had hired a white manager...

Unfortunately they didn't hire from within. Freddy was coaching third for the Braves organization this season. So you can throw that out.

Geez, no one can take sarcasm

Apparently not a very good use of the tool. ::) ::) ::)

As always, if you need the tool/font/cuecards/interpreter....probably just shouldn't go there.

Gonzalez was also a very very close second when Girardi got the job.

If you just had a job search a year ago and the position comes open again, of course you're going to look at the last job search to save time and money.

And if you decide to use sarcasm anyway, it helps to wave your arms in an exaggerated manner so everyone is clued in.

Nice try.
Next time, use the following:
I'm an alcholic
A clergyman molested me

Seems to work nationally.

Seriously though, these minority rules are just laughable affirmative action gone amuck. Say Tony LaRussa decides to leave St. Louis and he's willing to sign with you.

There's no chance you're going to hire the visible minority, so why do they force you to do the whole song and dance? Personally, if I'm the minority, I feel even more insulted by the rule than otherwise.

While the thought of a phony hiring process just to show they're "trying" to hire minorities seems laughable, especially to us whities, it is a good thing. What it does is identifies what minorities are capable leaders and candidates, and this is important because old, white owners aren't always, or ever, plugged into day to day rumblings of who's an up and coming third base coach. If you don't believe that there's still an old boy's network, then take a look at the retreads who keep getting jobs. Not to disparage the sick, but what made Buddy Bell deserve to be a M.L. manager again with the Royals? That one winning season with the Rockies?

Minorities, whether they be black or Hispanic, are often lesser known as managers, aside from cases like Ozzie Guillen who played for his employer, because they are outside the social circles of baseball. This idea of forced interviewing should be de rigeur for football (especially college) and baseball.

It's absolutely a good thing in leagues where so many of the players are minorites.

And we're off in tonight's Let The Newbie Pick A Dumbass Fight Derby.
