Of all of the active coaches in college and the pros, if you could pick one, who do you go with?

In the NFL, I'd probably go with Jeff Fisher.

In college, I would reluctantly go with Nick Saban.

To go all Patrick Swayze on you.... ditto.

Can't say I disagree with either of those choices. I despise Saban, but there's no denying his coaching ability, and Fisher consistently draws blood from a stone in Tennessee.

I see Saban the same way I saw Spurrier in the mid-to-late 1990s. I think he's just feared by everyone who has to go against him.

Fisher is one of the nicest coaches in the NFL. His players would kill for him and his act hasn't grown stale (cough, Shanahan) despite being with his team for more than a decade.

I must agree.. and I must now hang myself...

I despise Nick Saban, but I almost don't see how you can argue that he's the best in the business.

College: Saban, followed by Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel

NFL: Fisher, Belichick and Dungy are the obvious choices, but I think John Fox is vastly underrated.

Whether it is Albert Haynesworth or the last bench player he has in uniform... if that player is injured, Fisher is right there on the field with him.

It's, in reality, not as much a credit to him as it is an indictment on the rest of the self-important asses with the headsets on who would do no such thing.

If it isn't the Dolphins, I always root for Jeff Fisher.

Now, I just need him to take a loss or tie.

My top five for college might be Saban, Meyer, Tressel, Carroll, and maybe Stoops. Les Miles might be there too.

Your fins are showing, Simon.

I have the 31 years of (mostly season-ticket) stubs to prove it.

Fisher is tough to root against. Great guy. I don't think too many coaches in the league could be classified that way.

Les Miles might be there too.

Miles can recruit (not as well as Saban, but still pretty well) and he isn't afraid to take chances during a game, but his coaching (teaching) ability is debatable. There are very few players on that team this year that have improved much over the course of their careers. Plus, he hasn't really surrounded himself with good assistants (Pelini might be a good defensive coach, but he's never had to coach his own recruits).

After Saban, Meyer, Tressel, Carroll, I'd probably go Jim Grobe or Mark Richt.

Best coaches are Belichick (NFL) and Carroll (College football).

I'm not sure how anyone could vote for Fisher in the NFL -- he is clearly a very good coach -- but Shanahan and Belicheck both have multiple super bowls on their mantles and I am willing to bet both have similar, if not better, winning percentages, division titles, playoff berths, etc., than Fisher does. I also think you can make a better case for Jon Gruden and Tony Dungy than Jeff Fisher.

In the end, however, it has to be Belicheck, especially given what he has done this year.

College coaching, it is hard to argue with Nick Saban, Pete Carroll or Urban Liar. I could be convinced of any of those three and couldn't make a strong argument against any of them.

If you cheat and keep the best running back in college football on the sideline for your biggest play of the season.

Nothing wrong with those two.

Fisher and Meyer are right there as well.

I'd say Belichick and Saban.
But I give Fisher a big prop for rebuilding that team from scratch. Of course, the management was smart to stay with him during the lean years.

Belichick cheated. Shanahan can't win without Elway. Fisher's teams consistently overachieve. Gruden's team went into the tank very shortly after winning the Super Bowl with a team that Dungy built. Dungy's teams consistently choked for years and years (in Tampa and Indy) before he finally won one.

Carroll loses too many games that he has no business losing. Meyer is just now winning with players he recruited (there is no reason to think that won't continue).
