As in dental work.

I've got to go get one here shortly and was wondering how long it takes, and how expensive it is (roughly).

I have dental insurance, but I'm guessing it'll cover roughly the gas I'll waste driving to the dentist's office and that's about it.

I'm hoping it doesn't cut into my xmas shopping money too much.

I got one when I had to have a root canal a few months ago. I'll find the thread.

I think the $450 was for the crown and the finishing of the root canal. So probably $350 for a crown? Maybe?

A crown depends on the tooth. The closer to the front of the mouth, the less it will cost. They can run 8 bills, though.
I've never had one, thankfully, but was cautioned against the kind of tooth abuse that leads to them, and my dentist used a price guide to motivate me.

I'm sure price is determined by where you live. Beverly Hills or Bumphuck Valley. Also, what kind of crown you get, gold, silver, porcelain. I just got a porcelain crown. It was slightly less than $1,000. Insurance (I have the DPO so I can go to any dentist I want) paid about half so it cost me about $500.
You go in, they get rid of the bad tooth and clean up all the decay, take impressions, maybe an X-ray. They make a temporary right then so you don'tr have a hole in your smile. They send out to a lab to make the final crown. Takes about 2 weeks. You go back when the real crown is ready, they put it in. The second visit, they probably won't even need to get you numb. You might have to go back once or twice for minor adjustments to make sure your bite is correct.

Cool. Thanks for the info, guys.

I'm assuming I will be getting a porcelain crown, since my doctor is an 'expert' in 'aesthetic dentristry'. It is way in the back of my mouth, though, so I don't know if it really matters.

And thank GOD I don't need a root canal. I'm scared to death of the idea of those, although I can't say for sure why.

Have one on me.

Got one about 20 years ago. Was still on daddy's insurance thankfully. Mine is gold. The first one only lasted a couple of years because it basically rotted from the inside out. Root canals aren't as bad as everyone says. The worst part is the anticipation.

Disagree. I would rather have my tooth chewed out by a rabid rat than have a root canal again.

I just had a root canal and crown. First dental work I'd had done in a long, long time. My dental insurance was essentially worthless. My out of pocket expense was more than $800. You've got to factor in X-ray costs if you haven't been to a dentist in a while.

But mine was probably more expensive because my dentist has a high-tech system in his office that takes a 3-D picture of your tooth and then allows him to create the crown using a thing that looks like a computer-aided drafting station that you'd see at an engineering firm, or something. He draws in on the screen where the crown is going to fit and then the system creates the crown right there in the office. They didn't have to send it out to a lab to be done. Saved me from having to come back for a second visit.

Of course, there was other stuff the dentist found. It's like what happens when you take your car to the mechanic ... the second you open your mouth he starts finding stuff he can bill you for. I was impressed with the technology, though. It's pretty cool.

But I was surprised how little my dental insurance covered. I ended up having a four-figure total of work done, but they do 12 months free financing, which is nice. Moral of the story: Don't spend years blowing off going to the dentist, because even with insurance, it's damn expensive if you run into a real problem.

Damn right I've got a crown. And it's a babe magnet, let me tell you:

Had (quite) a few of these on Tuesday and I'm still feeling dehydrated. Drank water like a fish yesterday and still have that incredibly dry taste in my mouth. Crown doesn't get me hung over but it sure dehydrates me.

Really?
I didn't think anyone under 60 drank the Crown.

I play a lot in these free-roll Texas Hold 'Em tournaments in bars. The business that runs the tournaments makes its money by getting the bar to pay something like $3 a head for those who show up to play. The bar makes its money back by selling more food and drink. The players are encouraged to buy food and drink because they get chips for purchases. Crown Royal is one of the sponsors, so you get more chips for buying Crown. Seagram's used to be a sponsor so back then I would drink 7 & 7 (prompting the line on occasion "My best hand tonight was the 7 & 7.")

Crown is pretty damn smooth, but, like I said, dehydrates the hell out of me.

An entire world of which I wasn't aware.
Thanks.
Crown's just one of those things I never got around to trying. Hennessy's is another.
