Someone remarked to me the other day that there seem to be so few.

So who are they? Who would you go to war with in this business? Who takes an average reporter and makes him a good reporter, a good reporter and makes him great?

Who inspires?

If you had to work for just one SE the rest of your career, who would it be?

Emilio Garcia-Ruiz: Hard to beat a guy who helped to win a Pulitzer. And is high-energy and a good person.

Vince Doria: You might call him sports editor of ESPN.

To be a great one, you need all the tools: leadership, personality, ability to develop talent, integrity and hands-on editing skill.

Glenn Schwarz at my paper, the San Francisco Chronicle.

I have been am MLB beat writer for 20 years, with Glenn since 1996. I probably would have quit a long time ago if not for his patience, guidance and acumen. Worked for him in all since 1993 and still have not seen him raise his voice or upbraid an employee in public. Plus, he doesn't believe in meetings.!

Second the Harris nomination. And pretty much every other editor at a big paper in Virginia -- Jeff Gilbert, Doug Roberson, Steve DeShazo.

We've had that thread about 3 times in the last six months. Search the back pages for it.

As for mine, he's one of the greatest human beings I've ever known. The "I'd run through a brick wall" cliche was written about him. And others here can attest.
