Yes, you can build a great team.

You just can't sustain it for more than a couple of years without remarkable luck/talent evaluation. Because those bargain seventh-round picks who turn out to be superstars (see Brady, Tom) will eventually command cap space.

I have no problem with your theories there, OOP.
But if you like the fact that the salary cap spreads the talent and lets everybody compete, then don't complain when two mediocre teams are in the Super Bowl because you just said you like the mediocrity.
There are no great teams any more because it is not possible to build a great team in the era of a salary cap.

When did I complain? I like the NFL as it is.

And it was free agency more than the cap that has diminished the overall quality of the elite teams in the NFL. With legitimate revenue sharing, the gap between the haves and have-nots would never be as wide in the NFL as it is in Major League Baseball.

And expansion is still a major culprit as well. If you want to compare the league to what it was 20 years ago, you have to figure in the addition of the Jaguars, Panthers, Browns and Texans.
