This was forwarded to me. I'd like to know what others think.

Having this discussion elsewhere. Drawing the Phillies' offense as a white guy would have been wrong, unless you were only talking about Hunter Pence.

The Phillies only have one African-American regular in the starting lineup.
A cartoon with a black guy laying on a couch sleeping is very stereotypical. No way should this have appeared in the paper.

I never noticed the race of either player.

But no one uses corded phones any more.

What isn't wrong with this cartoon? The offense guy has major sleep apnea issues. Bacon is bad for you. Cliff Lee, based on the bubbles floating above his head, appears to be drunk. And who the hell wears their uniforms around the house? And yeah, the corded phone.

If the offense was populated mostly by white guys and the cartoonist picked a black guy to represent them, then yeah, that's a problem. But what's your argument, Drip? Only white people should be portrayed negatively? I guess I was too busy actually seeing them as people to fixate on their pigmentation.

I'm pretty pissed off they insisted on making Cliff Lee a white guy. How could they?!

I was trying to figure out how Lee was holding up the laundry basket.

That guy doesn't have to be black. Could be Carribean. Or Dominican. Really no telling.

So who's going to tell Mayberry or Rollins that one of them isn't black?

Still wrong Ijag. It's a person of color, which keeps stereotypes going.

If I'm a Phillies fan, I'd be a lot more worried that Lee has apparently lost his throwing arm. Perhaps in a bacon-frying incident gone horribly horribly wrong. Either that or he's really got high hopes for being Def Leppard's next drummer.

Not to ruin the fun little threadjack (hahah) but you can see Lee's fingers on the side of the laundry basket.

Yes you do...and I didn't notice the race of either player pictured until I went back after reading the comments here. This is a non-issue.

I don't know about it being a non-issue. It's my understanding there are many people in and around Philly not too pleased with it.

We still haven't discussed how this extends stereotypes.

1. Whites are the minority in the offense.
2. The sleeping character represents the offense, which is MIA.
3. The sleeping character is drawn with a darker-hued skin.

?

also having a dog run towards the vacuum. I've had a couple of dogs, and they were always scared of the vacuum. This cartoonist clearly knows nothing about canine psyche.
