What's the worst state in the Union?

Obviously in America, we love all our states like one big happy family. However, in every family there is a drunken, stupid, obnoxious uncle that privately no one likes for different reasons. Which state fits that bill for you? Sort of curious what people think and what their criteria would be for choosing said state.

Alaska. Just completely out of step with the rest of the country.

Alaska is just straight up beautiful in 1,000 different places though.

There are places I wouldn't ever choose to live, mainly the Dakotas and other similarly cold places. But a state I hate?

Illinois' roads suck. The drive through Kansas is a slog.

If this were a poll, I'm sure California would be a top response.

All the financial problems of California, none of the beaches. Corrupt state government. Southern part of the state shares anything that is wrong with the South. Chicago is a nothing-special city.

Nothing to do with politics. The scenery is beautiful. But everyone who has ever lived there that I've talked to says the people are just odd. The heavily out-of-whack male-to-female balance, the difficult travel, the obscenely high prices for common goods.

Yeah, I was with him until he said the Chicago thing.

I'm not a fan of anything in Missouri, east of the Truman Sports Complex anyway.

I'm a lifelong resident of California, and it gets its slings and arrows, and it definitely has it flaws, but there's nowhere else I'd rather live.

There are obviously good things about every state. But if you had to rank them, one comes in at No. 50. California is obviously majorly flawed, as is Florida, but no way are either of them dead last.

My knee-jerk reaction is always Michigan (having a dad that went to Ohio State will do that) but I know it's lovely, has the UP and the lakes, blah blah. And my sister is moving there soon so I'll have to cut way down on the wisecracks.

In lieu of that? I'll take Connecticut. I know some residents (mostly ESPN types in Bristol) and none of them seem particularly thrilled to live there. Doesn't seem to be terribly distinctive geographically, though there is shoreline.

I too think they all have redeeming qualities. But I wouldn't miss Louisiana, except for the casinos that like to take my money.

Good point on Louisiana. Outside of New Orleans, can't think of a reason for stopping.

Hm, pretty much everywhere has some good redeeming qualities. I'll take Kansas, Mississippi or Nebraska though.

North Dakota runs a massive budget surplus. That should put it ahead of any of those southern states that soak up federal money while whining about the feds.
