Weekly newspaper editor vanishes, is found safe

The 23-year-old son of the missing Bosque County News managing editor said he and his family are busy putting signs around their neighborhood, and waiting for any word from investigators.

“We have no information,” said her 23-year-old son, Michael. “I just want to know what happened.”

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ronnie Ashmore said it is too early in the investigation, to know why LaDawn Garland, 42, has not been heard from since 7 p.m. Wednesday.

She had worked earlier in the day at the Bosque County News, where she has been the managing editor for about nine years.

Garland called her husband on her cell phone and told him she was at the Waco Best Buy at about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Evan Moore, the paper’s owner, said when Garland’s husband tried to call her back soon after, she didn’t answer.

Garland was last seen driving a white, extended cab Dodge pickup, Ashmore said. The truck is owned by Moore, who lent her his spare truck after she hit a deer in her vehicle, he said.

Moore said today that Garland deposited a check into the newspapers’ account at 4:12 p.m. Wednesday.

“If the woman was going to steal my car, why didn’t she steal my money?” he said. “There’s $14,000 in that account, and she didn’t touch it.”

Moore also said he had seen no signs that Garland disappeared on purpose.

The Hamilton and Bosque county sheriff’s offices, the Texas Rangers and the Waco Police Department participated in the search. Garland and her family live near the Hamilton/Bosque county line.

Ashmore asked anyone with information about Garland’s whereabouts to call the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office at (254) 386-8128.

The missing 42-year-old editor of a Bosque County newspaper was found early today at a roadside park in Lander, Wyo., and taken to an area hospital, said Texas Ranger Sgt. Jason Taylor.
Wyoming authorities found LaDawn Garland inside the white Dodge extended cab pickup she was driving when she went missing Wednesday. While Taylor did not have the details or the time Garland was found, he said she is being treated for a “possible medical condition.”

When asked what the woman, who has worked as the managing editor of the Bosque County News for the past nine years, was doing in Wyoming, Taylor said, “That’s what we’re still trying to figure out.”

While Garland attended Cranfills Gap schools, she is a native of Wyoming.

Garland’s husband and three children have spent the past four days posting signs around their Hamilton County neighborhood. Law enforcement officials from the Texas Rangers and McLennan, Bosque and Hamilton counties scanned roadways by helicopter, thinking the pickup may have veered off the road and out of sight.

Garland was last heard from at 7 p.m. Wednesday when authorities say she told her husband by cell phone that she was at Best Buy in Waco. The couple was deciding what to have for dinner that night, said Evan Moore, the newspaper’s owner, and her husband told Garland he’d ask their son what he wanted, and call her right back.

His calls back went to voice mail and were not returned.
