Such a huge breakthrough. Still work to do in establishing screening tests and finding a cure, but this answers so many questions and hopefully gives some comfort to parents who have been through hell on earth.

The Sydney researchers were able to confirm this theory by analyzing dried blood samples taken from newborns who died from SIDS and other unknown causes. Each SIDS sample was then compared with blood taken from healthy babies. They found the activity of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was significantly lower in babies who died of SIDS compared to living infants and other non-SIDS infant deaths. BChE plays a major role in the brain’s arousal pathway, explaining why SIDS typically occurs during sleep.

Previously, parents were told SIDS could be prevented if they took proper precautions: laying babies on their backs, not letting them overheat and keeping all toys and blankets out of the crib were a few of the most important preventative steps.

While safe sleep practices are still important for protecting infants, many children whose parents took every precaution still died from SIDS. These parents were left with immense guilt, wondering if they could have prevented their baby’s death.

This one is unbelievable. There is/was a store in Westchester, near LAX, that sold baby furniture and all things for babies. The owner must have been named Sid. The store was called SID's.

Now that this biomarker has been further confirmed, researchers can turn their attention to a solution. In the next few years, those in the medical community who have studied SIDS will likely work on a screening test to identify babies who are at risk for SIDS and hopefully prevent it altogether.

In the very early 80s when I was babysat by my teen aunts in the summer, all of the soap operas they watched had ads for diet chewables called Aids. Then, shall we say, a news event happened. After a few months off the air they attempted to rally by calling it Ayds but no such luck.

A few years ago I went to Verizon to upgrade my phone and Verizon had a payment app named Isis.

That was one of our big fears when we had our first born.
Same, for both. I was pretty paranoid about it. Had a pretty big discussion with my mom who insisted that a crib liner or whatever it's called— a pad that would prevent the babies limbs from getting stuck between the crib balusters —was necessary, while I feared it would somehow cause the baby to suffocate or something. "Do you want him to break an arm in that crib?" "It's better than suffocating him, Ma!" Yeesh. And I'm pretty mellow when it comes to our kids doing dumb things that could get them hurt. But when they were babies? Nah, I was all-in on empty cribs.

My mom had the chocolate mint flavor Ayds and I thought they were delicious. I was about four or five and would sneak one every so often. She caught me once and whatever she said scared me enough to stop. Also she might have bought me a box of Andes mints, which I liked better anyway.

Dude, you got Ayds from a woman? That's what Magic said!
