Apologize if this is d_b.. didn't see it anywhere.

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

1.) Has anyone heard from Chef lately? He had like 580 oz of water during the first day of his diet.

2.) I guarantee my mother-in-law wails hysterically about this and turns it into YOU GUYS CAN'T DRINK WATER ANYMORE IT KILLS!!!!! She pulled out a similiar story a few years ago, when my wife and I were on another aborted let's-drink-a-lot-of-water-and-exercise kick. DON'T DRINK A LOT OF WATER!!!! she said. Cripes.

I thought about Chef when I read this story. I was drinking five and six 32 oz. bottles of water for the first few days of the new year. I can't imagine trying to drink a bunch of water without going to the bathroom. I'd lose after about 8 ounces.

I average a gallon to a 1.5 gallons per day. You'd have to do something stupid like not going to the bathroom or drinking an ammount much larger than six 32 oz. bottles, and in a very short period. If memory serves, the Chico frat boy who died within the last year of water intoxication drank more than five gallons in a few hours. There wouldn't be any salt left in a person's body.

Always hard to remember that everything should be done in moderation. Water intoxication and the subsequent dilution of the body's store of sodium is also being seen in marathon participants. Not so much the runners who are replacing lost fluids, but rather the walkers who are out on the course for and 6 hours who do not swet enough yet hve in their mind tha tthey have to drink water excessively.

I think this radio station is about to pony up a large settlement.

I think the settlement will be the radio station.

If nothing else, it'll probably scuttle the upcoming "Hold Your Wee-Wee for a Wii" contest.

It "occurred" because you had a stupid contest to see how much water someone could drink without going to the bathroom.

What other "information" is there? Maybe we could have O.J. round up a posse and look for the real killers.

Apparently, two gallons of water can cause overhydration in a healthy adult. Be careful cradlerobber!

I'm sure that contestants had to sign some sort of waiver that will probably cover the station legally. But I hope not.

A good enough lawyer would bust through that kind of waiver. I can guarantee you any kind of radio station agreement did not include a death clause specific enough to pass muster in court.

Paging JDV. Please pick up the white courtesy phone.

Did you or a loved one die from drinking too much water, whatever?
