SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The fate of Barry Bonds’ record-breaking home run ball is now in the public’s hands after its buyer announced Monday he was taking votes on whether to give the ball to the Hall of Fame, brand it with an asterisk or blast it into space.
Fashion designer Marc Ecko revealed himself as Saturday’s winning bidder in the online auction for the ball that Bonds hit last month to break Hank Aaron’s record of 755 home runs. The final selling price for No. 756 was $752,467, well above most predictions.
Ecko had not even taken possession of the ball before setting up a Web site that lets visitors vote on which of the three outcomes they think the ball most deserves. He plans to announce the final tally after voting ends Sept. 25.
“I bought this baseball to democratize the debate over what to do with it,” Ecko wrote on the Web site. “The idea that some of the best athletes in the country are forced to decide between being competitive and staying natural is troubling.”

Where's the option for mark it with an asterisk, then send that ****er into space?

If we can combine, I like the idea of branding it, and then sending it to Cooperstown.

That's one of the options on the Web site. That's what I voted to do with it. Enshrine it for all to see the big, red asterisk.

Of all the things that could happen to the ball, I can't think of anything better than the asterisk-marked ball at Cooperstown. I have enough appreciation of baseball history that I think the ball belongs there, but I love the idea of it being permanently marked by the fans. Brilliant.

Agreed 100 percent.

Then they need to cover it in asterisks so there is no way they can display it without an asterisk being visible.
I wouldn't put it past those folks in Cooperstown to try and cover up any branding.

No way would Cooperstown display an asterisk-marked ball. Not a chance. They'd go without the ball before they did that. They're not going to enshrine someone else's editorial comment, no matter how popular it might be.

Which is why I hope the guy covers it in asterisks, that way there is no way in hell it gets inside the HOF, just like the Big Cheater himself.

Are you this angry about everything in life?

I think he should give it to Cooperstown unmarked. Or just keep it at home in a display case.
