Is anyone working at a paper using the term novel flu instead of swine flu because pork producers don't like the term?

It's nice that we are trying to come up with terms to calm people's nerves instead of making them read the actual story to know that you can't get swine flu from eating pork.

Seems like calling it "novel flu" would keep people out of libraries and bookstores.

Around here, we just call it "The Squeals."

"Where's Nosey News-Side Girl?"

"At home, sick. I think she's got the squeals."

I think our copy desk is still deciding how to define it in the paper and online.

I've given Nosy Newside Girl the squeals many a time. ;)

I had that for a good chunk of my 20s.

I believe the PC term is porcine. It's less offensive to pigs.

Avoiding the swine flu is another reason to keep kosher.

Along the same lines of what phrases not to use, how about a kibosh on using the word "pandemic"? The hysteria level is just nuts right now, and I don't even know why.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pandemic

: occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population <pandemic malaria>

Pay attention to the second part of that. 130 deaths in a world of 6 billion people is NOT a pandemic, no matter what the WHO says. Hell, even 2,000 deaths is not affecting an "exceptionally high proportion of the population."

To report otherwise is simply reckless.

To paraphrase the Buddha, when you find "pandemic" in a story or headline at your paper, kill it.

Scientists call WHO's attempt to rename swine flu BS (Not in those exact terms)
