US crew overtakes Somali pirates

We need to stick a couple of destroyers out there and any small craft that comes near a U.S. flagged ship gets blown out of the water. I can speak from experience, it's quite funny when you swing the 5-inch gun around on a 20-foot personal boat. They stop.

Rather too many ships and rather too much water out there to be doing that. Also, why should it be the military's responsibility to protect private ships?

Why would there be 100 more Somali pirates by Friday night? It's not like this is an ideological thing. As far as I can tell, it's an economic thing.

That's been pretty much one of the primary missions of any navy from the beginning of time, to protect its country's shipping.

We've got several out there, I think. The nearest one was 350 miles away. A Navy plane has spotted the pirates, and the Navy is closing in at a rapid pace, from what I understand.

Then what?

Is there a political agenda behind what the pirates are doing? I thought they were just after money.

Have a read of the Esquire article on the pirates taking over the French cruise ship. I think it was linked on here not long ago.

It makes the point that these guys are not politically/religously motivated in the least - it's all about the cash.
