The Knoxville News Sentinel has an opening for a reporter to cover the University of Tennessee football team.
Please note that this is not an official advertisement for the opening. I just want to get the word out.
Candidates should have a proven track record in covering a college beat, breaking stories and understanding network journalism. You will be the lead reporter with assistance from other staff members.
UT football is the biggest beat and we cover it 12 months a year.
We will be moving quickly on this hire with the season opener Sept. 5.
Please send resume and writing samples to executive editor Steve Ahillen at [email protected]. No phone calls please.
Feel free to PM me for details.

Phil Kaplan
Deputy sports editor

Wow. Another prime-time SEC gig. Like the Birmingham job, this one will attract LOTS of interest - and has a newsmaking coach to boot.

Phil is good people and one of the few sports editors I know truly doing things right. This is a great gig and you'll have a great boss.

Couple hundy will line up for this one.

Hard to argue with that. Phil's good peeps. One of a handful of editors who have truly embraced the advance in newsroom technology. They do it right in Kville.

I'll be among the 100K in the sea of Orange for the UT-UCLA game Sept. 12. I look forward to reading the new hire. And this is a solid gig at a place that eats up the Vols.

Scripps paper for those who wanted to know.
Scripps as in "We're a newspaper chain that doesn't care about keeping newspapers alive" Scripps?

Great job. Great paper. I might even go as far as to say the best hometown paper in the SEC.

Drew is good people and has landed a good gig. Phil is good people and knows his stuff. This newspaper covers the Vols hard, both online and in print. This new hire will get some in-house help as well as from Nashville. All part of the recent content-sharing agreement.

What about Bryan Mullen? He's got two years under his belt covering UT for The Tennessean, and they pulled him off the beat a couple months ago with this content-sharing deal. Mully's a nice writer.

You mention the term "great boss." I'm not familiar with the term.

I've only worked for jerks and career lightweights.

And does Drew have a last name or is he a South American soccer player? And what is Drew's new gig?

A simple google search will produce his name. As for his new job, I'll let the said Drew or someone else share his news. As a friend, I respect his privacy. He's just fine.

Fair enough, Quagmire. I'll google the dude since I never heard of him (or her, since I know there's at least one female in the world with the name Drew). Thanks.

Add me to the list of people extremely happy for Drew. Dude has busted his ass since the day I met him.

Newspapers are losing another really good reporter and writer.

No comment. I wish I could, but alas ...
