University of Chicago cancels classes after FBI warns of gun threat

The University of Chicago announced Sunday that all classes and other activities planned for Monday on its Hyde Park campus will be canceled after FBI counterterrorism officials informed the university of a gun violence threat to the campus.

University President Robert Zimmer sent an email to students and staff warning them of a threat posted online by an unknown individual, which specifically mentioned "the campus quad" at 10 a.m. Monday. Zimmer asked staff and faculty members who do not have emergency duties or patient care responsibilities to not come to the Hyde Park campus. Students who reside on campus were told to contact their resident heads and " to remain indoors as much as possible if they are on campus."

"Based on the FBI's assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday," Zimmer said in the email.

In response to the threat, the university will bolster the police and security presence on and around campus, including personnel with visible weapons as the university keeps in close contact with the FBI, which is continuing to investigate the threat, Zimmer said.

Heard on the radio that he didn't have the means to execute the threat. Yeah, because getting a gun in Chicago is really hard:

Chicago engineering student who allegedly posted the online threat that shut down the University of Chicago was ordered released from a federal jail and into his mother's custody Tuesday.

Jabari Dean — a 21-year-old student at the University of Illinois at Chicago — was ordered held on house arrest but will be able to leave his South Side home for school. He also can attend religious services, seek health care or do anything related to the federal case.

Magistrate Judge Susan Cox also prohibited him from using the Internet.

In court, Dean appeared disheveled, wearing a jail-issued blue jogging suit and sandals. He spoke only during the 12-minute hearing when he told the judge he doesn't have the Internet at home and relies on the campus facilities to do his schoolwork.

During the brief hearing, Dorsey asked the judge if her son's arrest would affect his chances of getting a job, and Cox said she didn't know. Dorsey asked how long the terms of her son's release would be enforced, and the judge told the mother they would be in place until the case is over.

Dean, who is black, was arrested Monday when authorities tracked him down after being told of an online threat to kill 16 white students and staff at the U. of C., as well as white police officers, in response to the shooting by Chicago police of Laquan McDonald. McDonald, 17, was shot 16 times.

But it seems that threatening to mow down “white devils” for the sake of racial justice is not particularly newsworthy at Washington’s premiere newspaper. Reporters Lindsey Bever and Elahe Isadi gave no indication Dean targeted Caucasian students.

They simply wrote that, “A suspect has been arrested after a top-ranked university had to cancel classes due to a threat of gun violence against its campus community. [Jabari] Dean allegedly wrote a social media post over Thanksgiving weekend in which he stated that he would execute approximately sixteen students or staff members on the campus quad Monday, according to the prosecutor’s office, which cited a complaint and affidavit filed in court.”
