Unbelievable...World Media Comes to UC Davis

Very hard to believe that the Occupy movement's signature moment may be the pepper spraying incident at UC Davis, my alma mater. Davis was, and has always been, a place of high academic achievement where the students did not mind that Davis was not Berkeley or Westwood; they just put their heads down and studied to prepare for grad school or their chosen career paths. UC Davis' student body is a majority of science majors I believe.

When I was there, Desmond Tutu gave a speech about South Africa and divestment of investments in South Africa and it was the most powerful political moment I ever experienced, there were 10,000 people on our quad.

As for the incident itself, its appalling to me as an alumnus. However given how many people there are in this world, this one isolated incident does not make me think that the whole UC davis administration is intolerant.

Sad that UC Davis will be known for this for the next few years much like Kent State is ingrained in our minds.

Here I thought the most pub that would come to UC Davis this year would be the SI article that was written about the TCU coach (a former Aggies assistant).

My aunt worked at UC Davis. We would shuttle up from the Bay Area to see her and my cousins all the time. Very nice campus, very good school.

Amazing to see it in the news for something like this. As you said, this is not Berkeley.

The Chancellor had to be out in front of this after it happened. She wasn't. She failed hugely. The term "jackbooted thugs" gets thrown around a lot on this board but holy ****, what an image to show, in contrast to the nonviolent sitters.

It gets compared to Kent State in that the impact wasn't just the event, but where it was. Kent State was hardly known as a hippie haven before the shootings, just like UC Davis wasn't known as a bastion of liberal dissent before the pepper spray incident.

Certainly as a tragedy there is no comparison.

One hundred years ago, an American pharmacist named Wilbur Scoville developed a scale to measure the intensity of a pepper’s burn. The scale – as you can see on the widely used chart to the left – puts sweet bell peppers at the zero mark and the blistering habenero at up to 350,000 Scoville Units.

I checked the Scoville Scale for something else yesterday. I was looking for a way to measure the intensity of pepper spray, the kind that police have been using on Occupy protestors including this week’s shocking incident involving peacefully protesting students at the University of California-Davis.

As the chart makes clear, commercial grade pepper spray leaves even the most painful of natural peppers (the Himalayan ghost pepper) far behind. It’s listed at between 2 million and 5.3 million Scoville units. The lower number refers to the kind of pepper spray that you and I might be able to purchase for self-protective uses. And the higher number? It’s the kind of spray that police use, the super-high dose given in the orange-colored spray used at UC-Davis.

I did not mean to equate getting pepper-sprayed with murdered.

Just that like Kent State has been the image for the anti-war movement in the 70's, people are going to think of UC Davis when they think of the Occupy movement of 2011.

The whole thing looked like a bad Lifetime movie, with people playing their roles. Surprised at the police officer. University Police may not get the cream of the crop, but the department should probably be at least as professional as a decent sized suburb. That that was a lieutenant doing that stuff blows my mind. You almost think when the Occupy thing went down they dusted off their "Protest tactics" binder and did a quick brush up not realizing that they never inserted the revisions issued circa 1975, 1983, 1990, 1998, 2003. Really bad tactics.
