Ultimate Fighting coverage

I just got into watching UFC a few months ago when the Ultimate Fighter 3 came on and now I'm hooked. The last two PPV events have been sellouts and the tickets range from $100-1,000 each. Whether it's a sport or not, I don't know. But I do know it's getting more and more popular every year. Guys like Matt Hughes are getting endorsement deals, the PPVs and TUF shows get good ratings and restaurants show UFC matches just like they would boxing or wrestling.
UFC is definately not what it was 10 years ago and guys like Dana White, Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie will tell you that. If anyone thinks UFC is a tough man competition or bar fighting, they are wrong. I suggest at least checking it out once berfore making your prediction.
The Ultimate Fighter 3 finals are Saturday on Spike Tv and and the next PPV is July 8.

As I have in every other UFC thread, I'll point out that UFC doesn't do a good job of making it easy to get results into the paper.

The PPVs run too late and most SEs aren't going to hold a page just to get in the results of a niche sport. Hell, we don't hold for most championship boxing events, so why would we for UFC?

What an faulty leap in logic.
Just because it's a sport okay for adult involvement doesn't necessarily mean kids should do it.
And just because kids can't -- or shouldn't -- do it, doesn't make it not a sport.

I don't see any states running high school boxing championships.

Bruce, are you really suggesting these street fights get coverage in a newspaper? I mean, as a sporting event, and not in something like Hattori suggested.

Shotty, are you really suggesting that NCAA wrestlers are just "street fighters?" Most UFC headliners are former college wrestlers, and the guy who headlined the last show, Matt Hughes, was a two-time All-American. I'm stunned we even still have to have this conversation in 2006.

Look, you can't just build a cockfighting ring, toss in some martial artists, sell tickets to the same people who swear that pro wrestling is 100-percent real and announce that you have a new sport.

It doesn't work that way. If it did, I'd be the founder and president of the Professional Meat Jerkers Association (right-handed division, of course).

Culture decides whether something is a sport. And our culture hasn't yet declared this a sport, even if some blood-thirsty drunk duded think it is.

I'll admit this. Part of what bothers me about UFC is that it has a unique following. In other words, your typical sports fan likes the big three and then maybe a little hockey and some heavyweight boxing. Of course, I'm generalizing somewhat. But that's how I see it. But some of the people I know who enjoy UFC might only have a glancing interest in one of the big sports, if any at all. So I'm under the impression that they like UFC because it's almost like the anti-sport. I recall guys in high school who liked pro wrestling. Almost without waver, they all hated baseball, football and basketball. So I suppose I've always seen UFC as anything but a sport because it grew out of being an alternative to mainstream sports. For me, though, the bottom line is that too few people care enough for UFC for it to be anything more than an agate thing. Of course, if you have a local angle, that's great. But I'm not even sure that belongs on the sports page.

But maybe that unique following is what gets new readers to your section. I'm sure that would be something you cannot possible argue against. I could be wrong.
