… but with Putin looking to roll into the country any minute now, he’ll get what he needs.

Thought maybe the coming disaster would be worth its own thread, especially now that OSINT Twitter is full of reports Russia is pulling its diplos from in county.

I always thought World War 3 would start in the Middle East. It looks like it's going back to its old stomping grounds, Europe.

The subtextual stuff is pretty interesting to think about.

Someone upthread said the invasion would be a fait accompli with Trump in office right now.

Team Biden is taking this all the way in the other direction but so is Putin but so is Biden but so is Putin.

This Biden staredown vis-a-vis Trump's compliance to Putin is pretty phenomenal.

The safe money was on India-Pakistan or Israel-Random Moslem State. But Russia-Ukraine? I didn't have that on the Global Thermonuclear War bingo card.

And yeah, Biden is either serious or a very good bluffer. With COVID, inflation and wackadoodle Republicans, getting involved in a land war near Asia is only slightly moronic than going up against a Sicilian with death on the line. Ask Plato, Aristotle and Socrates!

I'm putting this here because.

https://pagesix.com/2022/02/12/tobey-maguire-couldnt-land-a-girl-during-night-out-with-leo-dicaprio

Old pals Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire were spotted partying together in the VIP section of nightclub MainRō restaurant and supper club in Hollywood on Thursday night.

“Tobey and Leo came to the club together for a boys’ night out,” a source tells Page Six. “It was very clear that Tobey was on the prowl and Leo was his wingman. Leo introduced Tobey to three different blondes.”

But it seems that even starring in the latest “Spider-Man” installment doesn’t attract the ladies.

“Even with Leo’s help, Tobey couldn’t land a girl,” the source continued. “None of them seemed interested when introduced.”

The duo arrived at 10.30 p.m. but called defeat less than two hours later, leaving, “because it was clear they were having no luck.”

That's because anyone who's seen Molly's Game knows how big a piece of **** Tobey Maguire is.

Russia is saying that they fear a Ukrainian attack on Donbas. Like they are dumb enough to provide Russia with an excuse to invade when they can't do much to stop it.

Ukraine isn't putting a hundred thousand troops on Russia's border, and NATO isn't either.

I really hope that Putin isn't misreading this. I don't think that he can roll the tanks in without this blowing up in a big way.

He’s counting on a few things that will likely keep this from blowing up
  1. It always comes back to the Soviet nukes. He knows the West is going to treat him with kid gloves because of those nukes. Otherwise there might if the US and the NATO allies will make his life miserable and despite putting up a strong effort, will eventually lose.
  2. Poland and Germany need Russian energy. A long conflict screws those civilians and their governments.
  3. A fractured US may not have the will to fight especially after Afghanistan.

I see this differently:

Putin has done such a job sowing discord in the US that a damn decent amount of Americans, mostly on the right, have taken his side. I think this is a test to see how much American support there will be to against him. 30 years ago they were still the evil empire behind the iron curtain. Now? ****, I’ve heard people say they like Putin more than previous American leaders because he is “more manly” than them.

I won't say there are none, because there's always idiots out there, but I haven't heard a single major right-wing talking head saying Putin is in the right here and that war in the Ukraine would be a good thing. Anyone with half a brain realizes how dangerous this situation is, especially when you consider some of the other bad actors around the world (China, North Korea) closely watching to wait for their cue to act on their own nefarious interests.

Speaking of India, keep a close eye on them if this truly blows up into a war beyond Europe.
One of the general beliefs/fears is that once Russia goes into Ukraine, China will take that as an opportunity to invade Taiwan. But one of the lesser reported stories from the past few years has been a low-key border war between China and India. It's just been skirmishes so far, but there have been soldiers killed on both sides. A year or two ago they had a bloody hand-to-hand fight on the side of a mountain where they were throwing each other over the side. They've also made their share of diplomatic moves against each other, and after or in conjunction with a Taiwan invasion the ChiComs could look at the outbreak of war as an opportunity to clean up another problem area.
If China gets aggressive toward its neighbors, the first nuke to fly could well be launched by an Indian government that's about to be overrun.

China and India's low-grade conflict is low-key primarily because it's being fought in the Himalayas, and the logistical challenges of just keeping troops, fed, unfrozen and equipped are such that neither side has massive numbers there. I also doubt if China wants to fight a two-front war. Taiwan is a huge priority for them. The India border is a minor one.

I'm old enough to remember covering the Persian Gulf War Super Bowl, XXV. I was sure Saddam would do SOMETHING to force a break in the Super Bowl broadcast. This was a war in which, unlike Ukraine, American troops were in active combat. Nothing interrupted the game. Nothing. If the balloon goes up, NBC will run a flash chyron and direct any viewer interested to MSNBC.
