UFC coverage huge hit for WaPo

So yesterday Jason Campbell debuts, the Redskins' freefall continues, a top 10 local hoops team is upset at home, the most important BCS rankings of the year are released and the Nats' best player signs with the Cubs. Sorta busy sports day 'round here. And what's the most-read sports story on our Web site this morning? A 390-word story on Ultimate Fighting, written off TV coverage by a freelancer, which appeared on page E3 of Sunday's print edition.

Not only is it currently beating all the Redskins and Nats and Hoyas stories on our site; it's currently second on the entire Washington Post site. Number one: Pentagon options on improving the Iraq situation. Number two: Ultimate Fighting, covered via TV, on page E3.

Means nothing.

It means the link was posted on something like Fark or on a UFC fan club blog/mailing list and generated lots of hits. Tom Dickson gets a gruntload of hits for his "will it blend?" commericials. Doesn't mean there is a ton of reader interest in blenders.

I clicked on the Washington Post story because someone called asking who won. We didn't have it in our paper. I did a google search and that's what came up.

That's what I was thinking.

My paper's site got an extra 100,000 hits one day last week because the link, for an AP story, was up on the Drudge Report. The story had nothing to do with our area, but it was by far our most viewed story for the week.
