Track style question...need answer rather quickly

Got a question on how to word something. One track athlete I'm doing a feature on said "we didn't know if we would even have a 4x2 team," or something to effect.

What I'm wondering is if I should leave the quote as "4x2" or change it to "4-by-2" or "800 team."

We normally use 800 relay, so if that's your paper style or if your stle is 800 team you could use the quote 4x2 and add (800 team).

we have decided our style is 4-x-200 so I would make the quote;
"We didn't know if we would even have a [4-x-200] team"


Too many people won't understand the coachspeak "4-x-2"

Not trying to be a smart ass, but did he actually say "four by two" or "four x two"? That's why I just would have made it clear it in parentheses and left whatever he said out completely.

AP Stylebook seems to suggest "800-meter relay" would be correct.

I'd probably paraphrase the coach's comment.
