I have no idea how someone could spend any substantial time in Charleston and not just fall in love with it. The food, the beaches, the downtown, the history, the shopping, the views...it is the most charming, non-seedy city in the country, IMO.

Meh. Any list like that that leaves out LA, DC and/or San Antonio is faulty. Personally, San Francisco is of no interest to me. Chicago should be #1. Indy is a great place to visit, especially on a budget.

I get your point, Broadie, but I am poor as **** and have enjoyed awesome vacations in five of those towns. The great cities have something for everyone. Or at least they should. Although, I'm not so sure about Carmel.

From the times I have been there, the only place that was of even marginal interest was Alcatraz. I don't like the city, never enjoyed being there, think there are thousands of better cities in the country to visit. That's just me though.

Well you can have inexpensive vacations in major urban centers as well. But that's coming from someone who has a free couch to crash on in most cities I would visit, so that obviously changes things.
