Zell showed his true colors (that of any rich a-hole) in a recent quote where he basically said what business is it of anyone what he does with his property.

He may hold the deed, but the stadium "belongs" to Cubs' fans.

Ask Invesco how replacing "Mile High Stadium" turned out. I think more companies would pay $5 to $10 mil to not to have their name mar "Wrigley Field" than they those that would. You may as well cut down the ivy and blow out the bleachers.
Likewise Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. The San Francisco Giants got so fed up with their everchanging stadium name, SBC Park, Pac Bell Park, ATT Park, they just put it on a magnetic letterboard now.

Yeah, the majority of fans still call it Mile High. Just like the ones in Cleveland will still say they're going to the Jake. South Siders still call it Comiskey (or the Cell)...

The Cell? NEVAH.

Ryan Field? NEVAH.

United Center? NEVAH!

I have no problem with a new stadium being financed with the help of naming rights (if it saves taxpayers a few bucks). But I do wonder if Zell can make back in naming rights what a name switch will cost him in terms of revenue and franchise value. Jeff Gordon when he just called it Wrigley Stadium and he got booed through the Seventh Inning Stretch. I imagine Zell would get the Bartman treatment times 10 if a name change goes through.

Big difference. The guy owned the team and basically built it as it is today.

Not a huge difference. He named it Wrigley Field to promote the brand
