Nothing Morris Communications does surprises me. If there's a worse corporate newspaper owner than Gannett, it's them.

Wait, what? How did I miss this one?

I don't know. It was one of the more ballsy and ignorant things I've ever read:

POLITICS: The lingering issue | Jacksonville.com

As Florida braces for what could be a rough-and-tumble political fight over ending affirmative action through a statewide referendum, the governor has tried to pre-empt the effort by a halfway measure.

But supporters of the referendum are continuing their effort.

Affirmative action was put into effect 35 years ago. It was racial discrimination but it was justified by Congress on the grounds that Americans of African ancestry should be given preferences to make up for past wrongs.

Among the wrongs was slavery, which existed briefly in America but ended more than a century ago.

However, while it is unfortunate that people from Africa were slaves in 18th century America, it was not unique.

The question rational people are trying to resolve is whether that fact is relevant to public policy today.

Wasn't that editorial more of a criticism of race-based preferences than a defense of slavery?

It doesn't explicitly defend slavery, but it certainly trivializes it and whitesplains to black people that they should get over it because they weren't the only minorities enslaved and it only happened "briefly" a long time ago.

To say that slavery existed briefly in America is extraordinarily ignorant or willfully wrong.

Slavery existed in America almost immediately after it was discovered and was the engine through which American and nearby island nations were able to grow crops such as cotton and sugar and tobacco and trade with Europe.

To downplay slavery as a momentary blip is pretty amazing.
